i'd go for one thats grows with your son you can get some that will go from about 9 months and last untill hes 11 years because you can take the back off to become a booster seat, they cost a bit more to begin with but will last a lifetime, also always use one as the fine for not using it is 40quid and your sons saftey is priceless (sorry people not using safety seats and belts no their kids drives me nuts) i have found the ones that secure your child with a seperate harness that is part of the seat (and then seat is held in place by cars seat belt or isopoint fixing if car has it) easier to use than the ones where both seat and child are secured by cars seatbelt

The only problem with the '9months to 11 years seats' is that they cannot safely protect that huge age range.

You would be better off getting your ds a '9 month to 4 year' seat that fits your car and when he outgrows that, then get a high back booster.

Is your ds in a infant carrier or a two way seat? If hes in an infant carrier, is his head near the top of the seat? If it is, then change now, if not, wait for a while until his head is. Dont worry about legs being bunched up.

Also remember he has to be able to sit for at least 20 minutes before going forward facing.

Agree with all of the above. Also get the seat fitted by somebody trained in somewhere like Mothercare. Then try and find it cheaper elsewhere. We found that a Britax one fitted our car in Mothercare then got it £30 cheaper in Toys-r-us.

Also, if you're lucky enough to have a car with ISOFIX...take advantage and use it.

We have a Recaro young expert as it also has good side impact protection.

  • Hi,

We are looking to buy a forward facing car seat for our DD who is 1 yr old for which we have a stretched buget around £140.

just confused about the following  -
    - is it better to buy one in group 1,2,3 (from 9 kg to 36 Kg)? If so, where can we buy one within our budget?

or are theree any better alternatives?

    Thanks in advance :)

go to your local toys r us/ halfords and they have people trained in car seat fitting and will advise you acordingly.

if your car has an isofix fitting then you can get them at your cars manufacturer but be warned they are very expensive.

obviously you dont wanna compromise the safty of your child but you can get perfecty safe and cheap car seats fitted by trained staff.

We have a Maxi Cosi Tobi which came out tops in the 'Which' guide.

We cannot fault this car seat, it's just fantastic! My daughter is 16 months and it'll last her till she's around 4 years old.

  • I wouldnt go for a 9month to 11 years car seat for the fact that a seat with that range cannot safely protect that huge range of ages properly.

It would be best to go for a stage one seat until your dd outgrows that and then buy a high back booster.

Has your dd actually outgrown her rear facing seat? If her head isnt at the top of the seat and she isnt 20lb yet, I would leave it until she is.
