  • Let's all be honest. When you signed up to this forum, who read the terms and conditions before accepting them?
Honestly? If you said yes, then I don't believe you.

I often sign up to things (both on the internet and on paper) without reading all of the T&C's.
But, if something happens that I didn't know about or expect due to me choosing not to read what I was signing up to, I will take responsibility for my actions and inactions and not try to blame other people for my choices in life.

    I agree totally with this.

I have every sympathy for someone who says "I hold my hand up, I messed up, is there any way to put things right?".

It's the people who rant and insist they were conned etc when in reality they did knowingly sign up to a free trial that would be charged unless they cancel within the period that I disagree with.

I've used the free trial myself, I know that you have to click to sign up. I know you have to read what Amazon Prime is about before you continue.

It would be perfectly easy for Amazon to make absolutely sure that people understand what is going to happen so why not do so?
Why not approach Amazon and suggest this?:

"Welcome to the Amazon free trial. You do not have to pay anything for a month but if you do not cancel by the end of the trial a payment of £48 will be taken from your card on the <date>.

Please tick the checkbox below to indicate that you have read and understood this message."

    Hi

Whenever I try the Amazon Prime free trial, I make a note of the end date and add it to my Outlook calendar. A handy reminder for me to cancel.

Because, as I said earlier, people aren't born with the knowledge of how these things work.

It's very easy for those of us with years of experience of the net and commerce in general to be smug and say that they should have read the terms more carefully.

But life is a learning experience and a lot of people need to make a few mistakes before the importance of things sinks in.

In that case, rather than running off to sign up to a forum purely to accuse Amazon of scamming or conning them, why do they not hold up their hands and admit they made a mistake?

Everyone makes mistakes from time to time but the bigger person is the one who owns that mistake, not tries to blame others for it ;)

    Hi

Thanks for that. No idea there's a no to auto renew feature.

This forum is for, amongst other things, warnings. So it makes sense for people to post warnings here. Inherent in the process of doing so is an admission that you made a mistake - either not reading everything you should have done or trusting someone you should not have done.

No, the bigger person is the person who says: "oh, dear, I've made a mistake, I'll take the trouble to warn others so that they won't make the same mistake.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of smug, self satisfied scumbags who love to lurk here and belittle those who make mistakes".

    Sad, but, true, nonetheless.

If people stated that they had made a mistake, I don't think that many responders would have any problem with that but the majority of people who have made a mistake and are posting on here are not admitting to it being their fault, instead they are refusing to accept any responsibility and calling it a scam, a rip off, fraud etc.
Here are some examples from the just the last 7 pages of this thread.
I too have been mis-led, by the Amazon Prime account

When taking out such a large sum of money, it should be made abundantly clear, in large print, right next to the accept button, that this trial will become a subsription with not a monthly, but an ANNUAL payment being taken at around the time of year when everyone is broke

There was no mention of a fee and I did not tick a box to agree to terms and conditions as Amazon said I must have

So you would prefer to see companies continue with scams so long as the smart-!!!!!! can gain a quick buck..

I have just been caught by this scam and all I did was click on a radio button that said "free postage with a free trial if Amazon Prime"

It is far from clear - certainly when I ordered with "free delivery" there was no indication I would be paying out regular chunks of cash

Amazon Prime is a scam. I was auto-enrolled in it back in 2009 and they have been taking $79 from my credit card account every year

I agree with shaun from africa - not many posters who post a 'warning' on here admit that they made a mistake.

    Below is a specific ecxample:

For those who say people were careless being caught unawares by Amazon Prime let me point out some facts. I have just been caught by this scam and all I did was click on a radio button that said "free postage with a free trial if Amazon Prime" I chose this option over others offering quicker delivery but with a postage charge because I did not need the item urgently. At no time in the order process was a fee of £49 mentioned or was there a tick box for terms and conditions or any notification of a subscription being agreed to. The first I knew of the charge was when it appeared on my credit card bill. When I checked my Amazon account transactions, it was not listed. Why do you think that was? So they could screw you for the subscription without you knowing! When I talked to my credit card company they said they had had thousands of complaints about this. The identifier code for the transaction on the card bill had a suffix of "Lux" so the money went to Luxemburg as part of Amazon's tax evasion scheme. As a multi-million pound company, they paid UK tax of a few hundred thousand pounds.

Not much of a warning there, is there, Azari?
More of a rant, I'd say.

Not much of an admission of fault there, is there, Azari?
More 'It's Amazon's fault, not mine', I'd say.

I agree with that - and those people don't get "belittled for their mistakes".

If anyone gets "belittled" at all, it's because of their inability to accept that that mistake is down to them.

    Sadly, though, it's true.

That doesn't mean that everyone who disagrees with someone's vent falls into that category, of course.

But there are a small number of people here who only ever seem to post when they can join a gang of others having a go at someone who has had a problem.
