  • I moved into my house 4 years ago. Set up United Utilities account, paid first bill by switch waiting for DD to be set up. Had workmen round to fix stopcock outside house. Never got a bill off them but still recieved mail from UU addressed to previous owner. Called UU to inform them of their mistake, they said it would be sorted, so I waited for bill. Still no bill and still mail for previous occupier. Left it for ages because I haven't got the time to sit on the phone for ages to force them to take my money due to their own incompetance. At present I haven't paid a bill for 4 years now and too scared to phone as bill will be massive. Any advice gratefully recieved.

  • United Utilities say we have used a total of 191 cubic meters of water in 12 months, adding the other charges ie standing charge, sewerage, surface water. The final bill comes to £750.28 per year (£62.50 per month) however 191 x £1.12 = £213.92 How can this be right ? surely the water supplied should make up the bulk of the bill. Please any ideas ?
BTW Small detached house, two adults, one teenager.

Your sewage charge is 90% of water used 172 units, and sewage charge is more than the water charge including the standing charge element, not sure what they are it will say on your bill the exact charges

Thanks for the prompt reply deanos. I understand what your saying, Whats your thoughts however on a bill of £62.00 per month ? bare in mind, small detached, two adults and a 19 y/o teenage son. Water use pretty average. Plus we are on a meter.

Phone them up and ask for a breakdown of your volume of water, volume of sewerage as these are timed by your cubic meters i.e; 191x1.218=232.64 191x0.965=184.32+27.00+14.00+63.00=£520.96 . You have to pay for your sewerage as what goes in must come out.

The amount used seems of the right order (same as me in a roughly similar situation) but the bill seems high for it even afrer adding the other charges (mine with Severn Trent is around £500). Are you sure there's not a carried forward figure there? What's the breakdown they give you?
  • Pls, pls, pls check your bills in case you are being ripped off by Southern water. We are very disgruntled customers as they were taking direct debit payments and keeping absolutely no record of it whatsoever. After weeks of wrangling 6 months ago and having things sorted, it all starts again with the newest bill we have received. They still think we owe them £140 or £70 dependign on who you speak to!! SCRUTINISE YOUR BILL and then write and complain because if they don't respond within their own timescales, they will send you compensation. Also check the bills of any elderly or vulnerable people who are possibly being ripped off by Southern Water. I will get this resolved, I am determined!!(And fuming right now!)
