E-on extortionate monthly payment

It's funny the statement of cancelling the DD and see what happens.

People have ridiculed this statement, but I have known too many people to simply run up massive utility bills with absolutely no intention of paying. They simply move out and cut their losses. The last place I lived in had a Warrant of Arrest for non-payment of Council Tax, and an energy bill of over £600 outstanding.

I wonder if they eventually get caught, or get away with it. As a student I got away with free water for a year because they simply sent us no bills.

Do all the energy companies pick numbers at random for the direct debit prices?

I had an issue with british gas, DD went up and down like a yoyo, Is it that hard to take one years usage and divide by 12 & add an extra pound or 5? Normally i ignored it.
But one year funds were tight.

In just over 14 months i had underpaid by £104, Probably less than that as the bill always seemed to arrive 3 days before the next DD was taken. Paying £32.50 a month. Was i shocked to check my bank statement one day to find they had taken £74.50, No phone call no letter nothing. I phoned to express my displeasure to be told i could goto my bank and reclaim it. That remark did not help matters. Now i was fuming..
Told person on the phone i cannot afford £74.50 a month & that it was an excessive amount for such a small sum. I even read the meter whilst on the phone, But still told the system works the DD figure out & they cannot change it.
I gave up & told them CANCEL THE DD..

WOW now i can get a real response.. Seems they can change the DD figure & we agree on £55, Still a bit excessive i think. 3 months later bill arrives & guess what i am in CREDIT....
Next day i am in sainsbury's & got asked would you like sainsbury's energy with EDF & collect nectar points. TOO RIGHT, i couldnt sign fast enough.

    BYE BYE british gas...

Why do the companies not contact the people when the DD has to be increased by a considerable margin? And agree a fair price. When BG took ther money i was not expecting that amount to go out & was nearly overdrawn.

    OOps sorry waffle over.

Eon are idiots, they sent me a letter (just moved to them) saying my direct debit would be £120 per month. I couldn't get through to them on the phone so I cancelled the direct debit. A few days later I get another letter saying the first letter was a mistake, too late though, I couldn't take that risk when I agreed £50 per month.

I'm now on pay in arrears but I'm leaving as soon as possible (when they finally agree a final meter reading with Scottish Power).

    Hi andrewmp

Really sorry you received the letter saying your Direct Debit would be increased. This was a mistake which was recognised fairly early and corrected immediately.

A limited number of customers were affected and we have tried contacting them to explain and apologise. Contact has been attempted by phone, email or letter.

Again, sorry you were troubled in this way.

Yeah, you did email me but it was too late as I cancelled my direct debit by now, now I've lost my direct debit (which I wouldn't get anyway so it doesn't matter).
  • I have a similar problem. I moved in to a brand new property just over a year ago. I got my first bill from eon which I paid, but when the next bill came in it was over 400. I phoned up and found out that the first bill had been estimated on builders usage. I made arrangements to start a payment plan and all was well. They contacted me a couple of months ago and wanted to increase my direct debit to 190, after contacting them we managed to get it down to 130 by changing to online tariff. I had a letter today to tell me it's going up to 213. I contacted them to be told I am now 700 in arrears. I can't afford this amount as I am a single parent with 3 kids and although I work I only earn 600 a month. It seems my only option is to borrow 700 from somewhere or have a PP meter which will end up costing nearly the same anyway which means I will probably get cut off quite a bit.

Was the meter in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'.?
  • No, I had just lost my husband and had to move out of our family home with my 3 kids who were devastated. Guess I should have thought about checking the bill and reading the meter, my mistake!

What was remotely nasty about the comment? In post #47 Mummy Duck stated that right from the off she could not trust the size of her debits or the readings on her bills. Quite clearly anyone in such a situation would subsequently be checking how much they are using, how much the supplier thinks they are using and how much they are paying.

Exactly when was it decided that keeping an eye on your meters was an arcane art that only the privileged and elite are capable of?

If one is £700 in arrears when paying £130 per month then the monthly bill is going to go up. £60 for the arrears and £60 for the usage. If you don't want an interest-free twelve month loan to pay back the arrears then you can take longer to repay the arrears (again, interest-free) using a prepayment meter.

If you want the cheapest rates and a credit meter then you are expected to be able to manage your housekeeping and the amount you are using. If you choose not to do so (or are not capable) then there are inconvenient consequences.
