She cant tax it herself until shes registered with dvla...(when garage return v5).

She can do it with the green slip. I've done that today with my new car - Insured beforehand, changed hands with the dealer then walked around with the MOT, insurance and little green slip and taxed the car at my local post office. :)

Blimey...a can of worms...I'll try and simplify...

    1) Car for sale at dealers in N. Ireland (where I live)

    2) Will be purchased for daughter (lives in North East of England)

    3) Insurance for her will be purchased by me using her address in England

    4) Car has to be taken to England at the middle of next week, reason? SWMBO and I were both due to fly over for a week with my daughter, then fly home again...this means instead I can book a single crossing on the ferry and fly home with my wife after delivering the car.

    5) Because of how insurance companies work...the ins certificate will probably not be available in that time scale, therefore the car cannot be taxed without it (also remember, the car will be in NI and the certificate posted to her address in England)

    6) A car being taken from NI to GB does not require anything other than (and I quote) "If you are moving your vehicle from NI to GB, you only need to fill in the change of address section on your V5C(NI) and send the completed Certificate to a DVLA Local Office as your vehicle is staying in the United Kingdom." Or it may be possible to enter the English address at that stage of the purchase.

    7) If the garage taxes it, then she buys it (well her mum and me buy it for her lol) the car will be taxed, the documentation completed to show the new owner and according to the text on my insurance certificate (again quoting exactly)
"5: persons or classes of person entitled to drive
The Policyholder - who may also drive with the permission of the owner any private motor car not owned by the Policy holder or hired to the policyholder under a hire purchase agreement.
This cover does not extend to vans, commercial vehicles, mopeds and motorcycles.
Provided the person driving holds a licence to drive the vehicle or has held and is not disqualified from holding or obtaining such a licence"

    8) Once the car is at her address in England, she should be able (when the paperwork catches up) to do a "change of address" if necessary, if its not added at the time of purchase.

Hopefully this might explain whats being attempted and it's not a "dodgy" exercise, the alternative is unfortunately quite expensive, will involve another trip to GB (and as SWMBO will want to go thats an additional passenger on the ferry crossing and 2 flights home....plus accomodation (my daughter hasn't the space to put us up)...

so please chip in with any useful advice, hopefully the Northern Ireland/GB bit shouldn't really cause too much grief...thanks everyone so far...if I haven't clicked your thanks button so far....I will get round to it.

Ok OP I will try to advise you as best I can. I am ex DVLA however the rules on NI imports changed just after I left in Jan this year, so I will try my best! I have no knowledge of any specific NI rules either.

To drive the vehicle on the road in NI or GB you legaly need to display road tax. If the vehicle is being sold by dealer in NI and you are intending to 'import' to GB then you will need to tax it in NI before its driven.

The dealer should have the V5CNI/logbook. Ideally the dealer should tax it for you, either using their trade policy. If they will not then you could tax it with your/your daughter's insurance certificate/covernote.

Many insurance companies offer you an instant PDF file with your insurance certificate in for downloading. Now officially downloaded insurance certs are not allowed for tax purposes (at least in GB), however provided it is of good quality you may get away with it. I have in the past! ;) You'll need to check with DVLNI that an NI vehicle can be taxed in NI using an insurance cert with a GB address. If so, then buy insurance withcompany that does PDF, print off and take with V5CNI and MOT to Post Office in NI to tax, and finger's crossed that will work!

If it works then when vehicle comes to GB your daughter will need to re-register it with DVLA Swansea at her local DVLA office, by filling out change of address section on V5CNI. She can keep the NI numberplate or request GB replacement. If she has GB replacement she will have a replacement tax disc issued by DVLA with GB plate on it.

If you are unable to tax it in NI in time for your bringing the vehicle over to GB then you are in a sticky spot, as legally it should be taxed. If you do chance it then do be aware that ports are spots often favoured by police/DVLA/clampers for finding untaxed cars, and some have ANPR cameras to automatically check (not sure which though). And she will have to keep it off road in GB until she has registered and taxed it.

Only other thing I can think of is for you to buy and register the car in your name in NI, add car specifically to your current insurance (you will probably need cert showing reg plate) then you tax it in NI. When V5CNI comes to you, you can then fill out change of address to your daughter's GB one and post to DVLA Swansea.

Well done Flutterbyuk25! I had a feeling that you would be the one to sort this out!!

Though it looks like the OP has some work cut out for them now. I hope they get it sorted.

Fortunately we have Flutterbyuk25 to come and put us all straight! You wouldn't think that there would such a difference as NI is part of the UK - we live and learn.

It's because up until Jan/Feb this year NI had a separate licencing authority for vehicles (DVLNI). All NI car records were held there, and they were classed as imports when brought to GB. Now they still have separate records but they can be accessed by both agencies so much better.

Since the change it's a lot easier now as it's no longer counted as an import, just a change of address. The only slight complication is if you want to change the registration plate as this takes a few days and tax disc needs to be changed too.

I'm so glad you came on this thread.

Do you think that I can come out of the kitchen with my laptop now? I want to let 'Chippy' know that I have found a knitting thread for him :D
