Buying second hand car...road tax

Is there any sort of leeway from when you buy a second hand car until you get everything sorted and taxed....e.g.

thinking of getting a car for my daughter from a dealership...its not taxed but has a current MOT...the car will be bought in her name and her address and insured in her name ( to tax a car you obviously need the owners insurance) , bearing in mind she lives quite a distance away (and I will be taking it to her) I had hoped to drive it under my own insurance (basic cover, car not owned by me etc etc) and apply for the tax as soon as she gets her insurance sorted.

So...is ther such a thing as 14 days grace...ot "tax applied for" type of scenario to cover this eventuality?

Thanks to any motoring experts who know the answer.:T

Every car I have ever bought was taxed by the dealer. There was a thread on here about vehicles needing to be insured when they left the dealer. Your daughter will need to insure the car anyway so why not take her certificate in to tax the car?

Get the dealer to tax it before you collect it,have they not offered to do this? (should have trade insurance so will have all docs to get it taxed)
You can then drive it legally.
No grace from DVLA or police:rolleyes:

A vehicle has to be taxed - there is no such thing as "tax applied for", not least as you can buy tax over the counter at relevant POs, with the relevant documents.

OP - the easiest option is to ask the dealer to tax it. Otherwise, you will need to go to the dealer to complete the purchase, then go "on foot" to the nearest PO and buy the tax (having got the documents from the dealer), then return to the vehicle. You could risk driving to the PO to tax the vehicle, but your insurance is almost certainly not valid if the vehicle is not taxed.

Get the dealer to tax it - easiest all round.

I'm also not convinced the car will be insured for you to drive it under "any car" on your policy. So be careful with that.

Car wont be insured on your 'any other vehicle' bit thus at risk of being seized immediately, with both driver and owner commiting offences

Owners offence is something like 'allowing vehicle to be used without insurance'

Mate was caught out by this.

If ther is delay in sorting her insurance and it can be stored in a private place then take out day insurance (see car insurance article on this site).

How do you know this? Have you read Torby's policy?

If he has 3rd party cover for other vehicles, then no offence in relation to the insurance.

If the dealer won't tax it, why not tax it online as soon as the deal is done? That way it will be on the DVLA system straight away.

Re insurance, get your daughter to put you on her insurance as a named driver for a couple of days/week.

    Sorted .. :D

    to sum up so far...

if the dealer taxes it (say for 6 months)
the documentation is amended to show my daughters details as owner
my policy allows me to drive a car "not owned" etc (it says on my certificate)

    I should be ok?

there are a few variables...I'm in Northern Ireland
    My daughters on the mainland
The car will be registered to her at the mainland address (must visit your dvla site)
Her insurance will be taken in her name at the mainland address (thats where she lives)
I will make the short ferry crossing and the drive on the other side.

thanks to everyone so far for the advice
