You never spoke a truer word
"Secondly, cos I don't have a clue....

But the OP here will have the change of owner slip of the V5 (hopefully) from the dealer which will enable them to apply for tax - totally different scenario don't you think?Genie

When I bought my last car from a dealer (some time ago) he had to register the vehicle to the garage before he could tax it I think. No problem to me it just showed one extra registered keeper when the documentation arrived.0

to sum up so far...
if the dealer taxes it (say for 6 months)
the documentation is amended to show my daughters details as owner
my policy allows me to drive a car "not owned" etc (it says on my certificate)
I should be ok?
there are a few variables...I'm in Northern Ireland
My daughters on the mainland
The car will be registered to her at the mainland address (must visit your dvla site)
Her insurance will be taken in her name at the mainland address (thats where she lives)
I will make the short ferry crossing and the drive on the other side.
thanks to everyone so far for the advice
It may be wise to give your insurance company a call just in case. It doesn't cost alot to put someone else on your policy for a couple of days, so you could be a named driver on your daughters policy for however long you need. I paid £20 once to put someone on mine for a week so they could drive my car.
As NI is part of the UK, I wouldn't have thought that it should cause any issues. If the dealer is reluctant to tax the car - it can be taxed online within a few minutes.Genie

Make absolute sure you are covered on the insurance.... ring them and tell them the circumstances.
Dealer taxes car and you drive off. Am thinking of a new one:beer:0 -

Not really, shows how little you DO actually know. He will need the reference number off the front of the V5.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

If you do not have the reference number on the front, you have the alternative of putting in the registration number of the vehicle instead.Genie

This happens if the taxation class is changed ie from disabled tax to plg and the dealer would have to go to a DVLA office to do this..Bob_the_Saver wrote: »When I bought my last car from a dealer (some time ago) he had to register the vehicle to the garage before he could tax it I think. Not sure how this will work now.
Are NI and mainland road tax the same?
How do you stand when moving a car to the mainland is this classed as an export?
Phone your insurance company, will they provide 3rd party cover for other vehicles on the mainland?
All starting to sound very suspect now, if you are stopped out of hours and the MIB are closed you may have the car impounded for no insurance.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
