Fantastic idea thanks will get her to try that!
She has spent a lot of time in my mates garden today so she is def growing in confidence although she does keep checking her escape route through the bushes in the garden and the gate are still clear if required.
One not so good thing is she has come into season today. Hmmmmmmmmmm They are trying to keep her in the garden as much as possible but with a low wall and privet with gaps in there is not much chance of keeping the roving dogs away.
I understand from a bit of reading that the most fertile time is from about day 10 is that right does anyone know? Hopefully can get collar on over the weekend and get her somewhere secure away from the dogs that will no doubt be arriving in hordes looking for her.
Its also looking quite likely that my mate will keep Lady herself (she has become so attached) if she turns out not to be chipped but its going to be expensive with spaying and other costs and as she is not on any type of benefit she will not qualify for help. The local vets have quoted £130 for spaying but does anyone know of any charities that would possibly help with the cost without having to hand the dog over? RSPCA have said they would but they would take Lady and then my mate would have to pass an inspection and then pay to get her back. Seems a bit unfair after all her hardwork and would prob be same price as just paying for the spay herself.

Once your friend has the dog safe, perhaps you could get the local paper involved. It should make an interesting story and then you could try the sympathy approach and see if you could get some donations in to help with the cost of spaying.

Again another good idea thanks hadn't thought of it that way I think its 2 months after season before she can be spayed so will give time to sort her out into secure area and then write to the paper.

the most fertile time is just after she stops bleeding - however, she may well get pursued by males before that, which may spook her... if your friend can catch her asap it would be good... but I do appreciate the predicament she is in!

Is it worth your mate leaving her patio/back door open when she is interacting with the dog and just wandering in and out - wonder if the dog might follow her into the house?

So many of the suggestions on this thread have been so sensible - and your friend is a saint (although I might also turn into one once I'd looked into these big brown eyes)

And thank you for keeping us all updated - it's much appreciated

    Yeah, what's happened to her??
Yaaay, I finally conned a man into making a honest woman of me. Even more shocking is that I can put the words "Happily" and "Married" into the same sentence and not have life insurance on my mind when I say it ;-)
  • Hi everyone,
Heres the latest for you and it's all good news.
Lady is now wearing a collar having been checked over by the vet and she does not have a microchip. She is slowly learning to walk on the lead and is living in my friends back garden which we have managed to secure. She still will not come inside but is using a large covered dog crate as a kennel and there are plenty of blankets etc inside to keep her warm and dry. We are just wondering what to do if it starts to get too cold before we get her inside? Don't really want to drag her in and lose all the trust so it may be a case of getting some sort of heating for the kennel.
She has def attached herself to my friend and is now howling when she knows she has gone out which we obviously need to deal with. What she is doing at the moment is when she gets back ignoring her until she stops howling and only then giving her any attention. Is this the right thing to do?
It is looking like she will now stay at my friends unless someone claims her which is doubtful judging by how long she has been around although pics have been put up in local shops etc and RSPCA are aware of her. She is however likely to be a sort of neighbourhood dog and even though she lives on my friends garden we are looking to get her to the stage where she will go for a walk with different people so there is cover for holidays etc.
We have managed to get a voucher for spaying from Dogs Trust so in a few months she will be sorted from that respect as well (can't do her any earlier due to her having just been in season).
Thank you all for all of your support it really has been appreciated. I will get some up to date pics next week and upload them all for you so you can see how well she is now looking.
