  • I bet there are plans for kennels on the internet - are any of the neighbours handy at woodwork?

It is worth remembering that it needs to be waterproofed, but not with creosote, and that most heat is lost into the ground when it is cold, so it needs to be raised off the floor, preferably on a layer of something really insulating. I guess polystyrene would be warm, but not that durable... cork tiles are insulating too...

I wonder if we could get anyone to make or donate one locally.. hmmm...
  • Having had a quick look online (not in depth yet) the insulated kennels are at least £100 a fair bit to pay out unexpectedly!

I don't know of anyone that is particularly woodwork minded but I will have a go at anything so will probably end up trying so if I disappear and there are no updates on Lady for a while you know I have probably hammered a nail through my finger or something! LOL

Just thinking about the raising it bit, the cage as it stands is raised by about 3 inches but obviously not having to worry too much about the cold att the moment. Would we need to raise it off the ground and have waterproofing and insulation eg tiles/polystyrene attached somehow to the bottom or would plastic, then tiles then kennel be better with no gap between ground and the layers???

Hmmmmmm hope that makes sense all idea's/suggestions are greatfully accepted!

Have you put anything on your local freecycle site? Its amazing what people come up with on there free.
  • Nothing on freecycle near my mate or me at the moment that I can find but will keep checking and maybe widen the net a little as I am more than happy to drive to collect.

  • Hi there,

If you google Mr Snugs dog kennels you could have a look at those kennels. They are made of a strange kind of solid plastic but are warm in winter and cool in summer ... all you would need is a bit of carpet down inside.
Because of what it's made of, it doesn't harbour any bugs/spiders/any insects so you would never have to clean it or worry that all those nasties were getting in there with her!!

It will never rot, is leakproof, waterproof and windproof ... it's a sort of mottled colour and arched over at the top (although you can get some that are pointed like wooden dog kennels.)

I have one for a stray cat that used to come into the garden ... wish to God it was big enough for this little lady because your friend could have had it with pleasure but am afraid it is only a very small cat size ...

I would say go for one of these though without any hesitation ... they will never rot and should last a lifetime!
  • I would try asking on freecycle first - a bit of recycling is good for the environment!

If that fails, I could ask around - my auntie used to have a kennel for her dog, and I don't know if its still about - let me ask around, if I happened to find one I am not far from Sheffield and am up there working quite often. Do you want me to ask on my local freecycle too?

I also think it will be sods law that if you go all out on a nice flashy kennel, it may well not get used, as I think doggo may soon be venturing inside the house - look how far she has come already - and even of not, so long as she is warm and dry she will be fine, and it is not that hard to achieve, even if it means thinking a little creatively!
  • FC you are a star and I would certainly appreciate if you would look on your local freecycle or if your Auntie has the old kennel lying around anywhere if she doesn't use a kennel whether built for her or freecycled etc I will make sure it gets passed onto another deserving cause!

    Hi

At one time we had daytime kennelled dogs with their own individual kennels.

They are so easy to make and are very warm.

Square kennel with a sloping roof and polystyreen in side then just put a thin slice of wood up against all sides, litlle rag material for the doorway. Really insulates it even in winter and easy to make and cheap.

Our dogs would come out with hot bodies, so must have worked.

She's lovely and very beagle looking
