The Potting Shed - come on in, the kettle's on!

stilernin - I completely agree. I've seen pots of veggie seedlings for sale in our local garden centres at prices which almost make me choke. There was a plastic pot of beetroot seedlings - all far too big to transplant and far too crowded to be able to grow in the pot for around £5, and other silly things like radishes in pots for silly prices. When you consider how many radish seeds there are in a packet, this is nothing short of daylight robbery of innocent people who want to start 'growing their own'. I just get my own back by making loud comments to anybody who looks like they're about to buy something like this to the effect that "a packet of seeds costs about £1.99 - I can't understand why people would pay £5 for something that won't even grow properly". I grow all my vegetables from seed. The only time I buy vegetables from a garden centre is if I've have a drastic germination failure and it's too late for me to resow, and even then I nearly choke when I have to open my purse at the cash till because I know I'm not getting value for money. And the sad thing is that many people who buy products like this have no idea of costing them up and end up paying more than that would do if they bought them in the supermarket.0

I know what you mean about the prices, I saw pots of carrots for £4.99 and lettuce leaves £3.99, it's very expensive isn't it!Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0

Hi, I have just seen this thread in my exhaustion after a battle with the weeds.
Does anyone have a way to get rid of Lords and Ladies? the damn things have self seeded all over the place.
Just dug up a lovely smelling clump of oregano to take to an elderly neighbour; she is the garden queen really.

The garden centres are full of the grow your own craze aren't they and at such silly prices. One near us has turned part of a filed behind it into lotties, great idea and they have sheds or greenhouses on them. They are charging £5-10 per week, that seems an awful lot to me.
Decided to leave moving the gooseberries until autumn.
Potted on my tomatoes
Hardening off my corm - it is starting to lean over at the root base - can I plant it deeper when I plant out?
Resown runner beans and leeks again! Sown a few french beans to.
Lots of the dahlias I split and potted up last week have started to sprout - I will have heaps to sell or give away. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
Hi all
I am on the verge of moving to my new house and would dearly love to start growing some grub for my family. I have no gardening skills whatsoever and don't have a clue as to what to do first, when, why or how!
I've been trying to find a week by week, basic level guide to work with, preferably with space to write some notes in but having a tough time finding one! Can anyone recommend one please?
As I said, I have never grown a thing in my life so it has to be very simple to follow.......seriously!
Thank you heaps in advance!

iv spent the afternoon re-potting sweetcorn, strawberry's, cucumber and onions and planting my rasberry canes, sunflowers and red gooseberry bush that i got from a car boot yesterday some into the ground andothers into large sturdy pots from a farm shop for 50p each! bargain!0

The local garden centre has veg seedlings priced at £3.49!:eek::eek::eek::eek:
I thought that was shocking for 9 cabbages or 9 lettuces....... but for a strip of 18 radish seedlings !!! They were far too close together to grow to maturity and I wouldn't want to try transplanting them.
I understand all about overheads etc, but surely this is taking advantage of the 'grow your own' craze and even bordering on racketeering. Also, won't new gardeners be put off, never to return, when they fail with these expensive plants?
That is a disgusting price. Well, I'd hope these days with widespread broadband these beginners would join gardening fora to learn what to do (or what's gone wrong) and discover from them that a packet of radish seed from Wilko is as low as 28p and try again.
Cup of coffee please as I'm totally thoroughly peeved with the digger guy as I found out yesterday he hasn't backfilled with my better topsoil to a sufficient depth.:mad::mad: Really peeved. No longer half of Optimisticpair
