you don't go to one if you want good food!

I would disagree - some buffets do have 'good' food and the bonus of being able to pick and choose many things to try rather than sticking with ordering one thing off the menu - something that's especially hard with the phonebook sized menus at many Vegas restaurants...and you can try several desserts. :)

I suppose 'good' is quite a relative term so it will mean different things to different people...you won't get fine dining quality food at a buffet, but at some the food is quite 'good' IMHO.

if it wasn't for a Vegas buffet, i probably would never have got the chance to try things such as Scallops, Sea Bass and Prime Rib :)

basically the stuff that's expensive in restaurants over here (tho i'm not sure what prime rib is or whether it's usually expensive!)

I personally would recommend to anyone to try Mandalay Bay lunch buffet in Vegas - just to see what it's all about, plus it's only $20 p.p and you can choose what you want, as much as you want, you get the drinks.

I guess that's the kind of people we are though to be honest - we regularly will order 'taster' / 'sampler' plates as we like to pick and choose and try new things etc without fully committing ;)

Anyways - re: buffets... definitely worth doing once! :)

    (... in my opinion :D )

There's no denying that the food at most is quite edible but good...... yes good is a relative term.

Embedded in your reply is the crux of the matter,,,you can try many things and several desserts. Ie you can stuff your face with as much as you want and it won't break the bank. What we would normally call a WiFi food solution.

Thanks for all the advice - and the 'discussion' that has followed - in fact, it has all been rather illuminating. The half price ticket booth certainly sounds like it is worth the detour - do I need to get there early (hence the breakfast nearby at peppermill?) for a decent stab at good tickets? ... and anyway, what constitutes 'early' in vegas??!

We will be trying a buffet (at least once!) and some good names have been mentioned. We are going to Vegas to try as much different stuff as we can - a show, a buffet, a posh restaurant (maybe just the one!) the free fountains, the lions, a huge breakfast, the atmosphere of the place ... and maybe even a flutter :o

still dreaming that we can put one coin in a slot as we pass and pay for the whole thing

Oh! and thanks for the whale watching trip rec - I am *very* prone to seasickness, but the other two are OK - maybe I shall look out for some effective tablets :D

... very excited now - off to London tomorrow, flying early Thursday morning. This time next week I will have left DD in camp and be in Vegas :D

Maybe a $1 note instead? only a very few places have slots that still accept coins and even less have ones that pay out in coins - most accept notes or the tickets that the machines pay out (which can be cashed at little kiosks scattered around the casino or at the cashier's cage...but I understand the dream in principle and hope it does come true - one day it will happen to us too. ;)

Me too - and nodding a lot...and giggling and my husband looking at me rather accusingly. ;)

Someone once told me it's called rib of beef over here and that you can get it from butchers but not normally a supermarket...not sure if that's right, or if it's expensive in the UK, but I know my husband and father-in-law think it's delicious. :)

Tix4Tonight opens 10am till 8pm and they post the day's shows at 9.30am. I have heard of people queuing for an hour first thing in the morning to get what they want.

We have only ever gone in the afternoon as the shows we want to see are usually still listed. They did have Carrot Top sold out one time, but we managed to get tickets from Tickets2Nite when they were still on the go.

I agree that a first time visitor should sample a buffet as, until you have seen the size of them in Vegas, you can't imagine that much choice of food available in one place.

We do a few buffets for the convenience. OH can eat as much as he likes and sample several things in one sitting. Not really worth it for me as I will have a pancake or a crepe and that's pretty much it as I can't eat in the morning.
