It's funny, we all have our little places that we like, and sometimes we also know they're not that special. We went a couple of times to the Sahara Buffet (with 2/1 coupon from ACG), and we thought it was really ok. :rotfl:

We also eat at buffets, usually when we can't be bothered making the effort, and know exactly what to expect - plenty of choice, as much as you want, edible food in pretty poor surroundings

If someone asked "whats a good buffet" then the usual places such as spice Market/ Wynn/Bellagio/Mandalay Bay would get a fair few comments .... but to simply say "you must try a buffet" to a first time visitor does my head in. The food is certainly not "to die for".

Just don't tell me to stay at Circus Circus...:rotfl:

On Sunday i was listening to a "Travel Expert" on a reputable radio station answering questions and someone asked him where he recommended for Vegas........they wanted somewhere "nice". He recommended Circus Circus -didn't mention other hotels. Said he had stayed there and it was very nice indeed

I disagree-I think every first time visitor should try a buffet-it's a part of Vegas culture :)
Couple of them the food may not be "to die for" but some of the dessert selections are ! :j

Romano's Macaroni Grill opposite Palace Station.

OMG! I never thought to check if there was a Macaroni Grill in Vegas!! I used to love that place when I lived in the US. Must look into this - and we've been to most of the Station casinos, but never Palace Station - so we can tie it in with a trip there. Thanks!

hmm, I see what you're saying. Vegas buffets have for decades been big news, but then again it all stemed from the 99c steak dinners. Nowadays you can pay something like $80 for some of them - no longer the bargain they were and still selling average food.

I've never ever seen a dessert "to die for" in a buffet, or one that came close to being of the same quality as one you would get in a proper top quality restaurant.

I wouldn't presume to know peoples financial situation and therefore would never dream of suggesting either expensive places for a good breakfast or the cheap and cheerful buffets or Peppermill suggested.

I certainly also wouldn't suggest a place at the other end of the strip unless it really was special rather than a "pile it high" posh Dennys!

Peppermill has the added bonus of the decor which is fabulously Vegasy in my mind...plus the Fireside Lounge which has featured in several movies (including Casino)...so to me it's a perfect mid-range Vegas suggestion - good food, reasonable prices and a little something extra - and it's not a place may people would find on their own. We wouldn't have found it if it weren't for my reading about it at Open Vegas.

As for the first part - I don't think anyone presumes to know anyone's budget (unless they specifically state it)...we just recommend places we enjoy and they might, mostly in the low to mid range because really, that's what the majority of people want in Vegas. Sure, many could probably afford higher-end establishments, but some (like us) get hives even thinking about setting foot in a posh restaurant...so the mid-range does us just fine. Regardless, people ask for suggestions, we suggest places we like. Should we just make no suggestions at all until we have a full run-down of dining budgets?

FWIW, to me a cheap breakfast would be somewhere like Ellis Island which we've yet to try...from memory, ham and eggs there = $5.99. Ham and eggs at Peppermill = more than double that. Other options like the Gold Coast buffet (great breakfast last time we were there though that was a few years) or Main Street Station buffet downtown would also fall into the 'cheap' category to me...both also less than half the price of a main at Peppermill (and 2-for-1 coupons readily available).

Why does it do your head in ?? . i think it is perfectly reasonable that people give 1st time visitors the heads up on what to expect at a Buffet , ect and to put them on a list of "Vegas" things to do . If you were in Cape Cod for the 1st time for example i would say " you must try a Lobster roll" , if anyone asked me about food . if they do or not is another matter , but they asked so we told .

i also have to ask what extra effort to you have to make at any restaurant in Vegas over a Buffet ? we never dress up very posh to eat out , and not many restaurants will turn you away in Vegas because how you are dressed .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

I think the whole thing about this panel is opinions, and this counts, if someone recomended that I should do something because of their personnel experience I would consider it.

Ellis Island, I am not a snob, but from the outside would I have ventured in without this, probably not, but I have been there on numerous occasions and enjoyed myself.

As mentioned everyone on here is giving advice, circus circus, I have many american friends who will not stay elsewhere as they love the place.

There are many good points in vegas and also many not so good, and I have had some bad meals in very expensive restaurants.

So looking at the table to-date that is 64 visits to vegas between now and xmas, and all these people look on this site for opinions, and ideas, not bad going, shame you can not get some extra discounts in certain places with these numbers, like a MSE Ellis Island special, it is money saving!

    Well done trets!!!

and I would say, "if you like seafood, you must try a lobster roll"

    or

if you are prone to seasickness, make sure you take something before going whale watching

"i think it is perfectly reasonable that people give 1st time visitors the heads up on what to expect at a Buffet " -

but you didn't say what to expect - all you said was go to one, and as Duchy quite rightly pointed out, you go to a buffet cause it really is a thing to do while in Vegas - you don't go to one if you want good food!
