I disagree with the idea of not going on a budget...to me "going on a budget" doesn't necessarily mean going as cheap as possible, but having a set amount you're happy to spend/lose/not bring home...I think Vegas more than anywhere else I've ever been can be dangerous if you don't go into it knowing what you're happy not to have in the bank when you come home.

You're right that no one can say, it's up to you...I know you've been before but think you said it's been quite a few years? What helped our in-laws when we took them last time was that we gave them links to some restaurant websites to see prices for themselves...we included mostly what we expected to eat - mid-range places, a buffet or two, etc. We did eat at some cheaper places but by giving them the mid-range stuff to look at the could budget for it and perhaps spend a bit less than expected. And we told them normally we eat 2 meals a day and ususally it's breakfast and dinner. At least that way they could see actual prices and get an idea what they would want to budget based on what they would order.

As for everything else, well, that really is up to you. :) We gamble a lot - so our daily budget may be higher than some who don't gamble much. We're not big drinkers so never buy drinks, just take the freebies when gambling. We also don't count shows against our daily budget (and no, I don't know why - we just don't :)), nor do we count things like clothes shopping where it's not really a cost of the holiday to us.

What we've found works for us is to take about 1/2 of our budget in a combination of cash and pre-paid currency cards...then we put the rest of our holiday money in our Nationwide account. That way we know we have more available and what amount, but if we don't need it all (which so far, knock on wood, we never have) what we don't need to take for the holiday stays in ££ in our Nationwide account.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Here's a handy site for finding the cost of a taxi from any two places in Vegas and not just from the airport:-

    Have to agree with ferf.

We always set our budget food, taxi's and shows and all that stuff and then we also set a daily limit for gambling and this should be the amount that you are totally comfortable to lose. If you're not comfortable, lower the amount until you are comfortable. We the look at this money as entertainment and when it's gone, it's gone. We don't regret spending it and we don't try to "win it all back". Just remember to stick to the budget once you've agreed it! :rotfl:
