Don't buy from comet dixons or currys simple but effective rule.

They are going to be rebranding their stores soon, will it make any difference? No.

I bet they'll try worm their way out of as many warranty claims as possible though, by saying Currys/Dixons doesn't exist any more.

Unfortunately when you buy certain items from Comet (i.e PC's and laptops) the staff are not allowed to confirm faults due to the manufacturers requirements. This happens with Acer, phillips and other top brands. Unfortunately the customer care staff at comet have to do what the computer system tells them to do, and sometimes this says that the customer must ring the help line and have the fault confirmed before they can bring it to the store. I must also add that this is always written on the paperwork within the product.
Why I buy a product, my contract is with the retailer. I do not have to deal with the manufacturer at all - that's Comet's problem.

If you cared to read the paper work that comes with your product then you will simply see that the company who made the product are telling you to ring them first. They do not allow Comet to confirm faults due to the proplems it has caused in the past. (members of staff making problems worse). This is not Comets fault as they cannot 'make' companies such as phillips and acer change their policies.

And its your problem because if you dont follow the manufacturers policy then you dont get your product fixed.

I don't care what "manufacturer's policies" say - I go by the law and the law says my contract is with the retailer.

I have bought stacks of stuff from Comets Clearence site. Most purchases have been great, or I have had a speedy repair/replacement. I did have a problem with a tumble dryer once though. Basically the item was "born wrong". This was one of their used and returned items, supposedly checked out by an eningeer.

I had 2 repairs und the 12 month guarantee then 6 months after the garantee ran out it shorted out and tripped my RCD, failing in a dangerous mode. As expected they tried to wash their hands of it

I was actually cut off by the customer service department, for simply repeating my request to escalate the problem further. However I did get the guy's name.

I then phoned again and asked to speak to their executive department. A senior manager there heard my story then agreed to look into it, and I passed on the details about the customer service mavarick I had just spoken to.

A week later I received a letter asking me to arrange collection or take the item into a local store for a full refund. I took it to the Marsh Mills store in Plymouth where the CC was refunded in full.

    interesting!

do we have more rights buying goods online than through a store??

also - recently with my comet problems - the head office kept sending me back to the store - who did the same by sending me to the HO

The store refused to give a refund point blank - n very nasty too
the HO were willing but on speaking to the store also changed their tune.

    I think you do.

When you buy online, you having a "cooling off" period, i.e. a time in which you can inspect the goods and, if you don't want them, you can send them back whether they're faulty or not. In a shop, however, they have no legal obligation to take back non-faulty items.

Another thing about online purchasing, is that you can cancel your order at any time. Then, if the goods still arrive, they are classed as unsolicited. Then all you have to do is "make the goods available for uplift" and if they don't collect them/pay you to send them back within a "reasonable time", you can keep them at no cost.

That happened to me when I bought a USB DVB-T tuner from Amazon. I paid for 48hr delivery, but it hadn't even been despatched in that time, so I cancelled. It still arrived and they sent someone to collect it the next day. Still took them a fortnight to give me my refund though...

    Hi

I had HUGE problems with Comet when my TV packed up!!! To cut a very long story short:-

    1. Phoned up - following week engineer came out said it was the tube (even though I told them this when I reported the problem) said he would have to come back next week as needed 2 men to lift it!

    2. Following week 2 men collected and said it would be back within a week.

    3. 3 weeks later and numerous telephone calls tv returned - checked whilst drivers on premises - tv not working - rtnd tv with them! Phoned CS and told them I had rtd. tv with del. men as it had not been repaired - CS told me twice that she would have to send an engineer out - I had to explain twice I had sent it back!

    4. Two weeks later - promised they would bring it back after 2pm - they came in the morning - I was at work as could not get any time off so they took it back to the depot!

5.Two weeks later - delivered tv back - opened packaging up to test again before delivery men left and mint condition TV now had cracked and scratched casing! Looked like they had dropped it - I was in shock that they had the nerve to even try and return it like that - sent it back with del. men!

    6. Many, many phone calls later - people on holiday etc. promised day to deliver - waited in all day - no TV!

    7. Two days later - again promised to deliver so I asked them to check TV before they returned it to ensure it was working and new casing fitted and in mint condition - as had been when left me! Rather sheepish CS called to say TV still not working and I was now to go to store and chose another!

    8. Awful store manager who didn't believe me when I got there and took 2 hours to sort out! Tried to palm me off with lower spec. model as they no longer had my original TV - had to send OH out of shop before he socked him one!

All these weeks of waiting I did not even get offered a loan TV and had to borrow daughters portable which was awful as ours wa 32"!

I am sure I have missed bits out but this was last October and very stressful at the time - Moral of story - NEVER BUY FROM COMET AGAIN!
