Well done Savvy. I found myself in £28k of debt in March 2007 after my partner of 7 years left me. Stupidly I had taken out loans for him in my name and gotten into a muddle with credit cards which I used when he was out of work to pay for every day living (quite frequently!). Very, very silly of me, but as my name was on the contracts etc I was liable.
As the debt was more than what I earned I did a self-assessment, contacted all my creditors, explained the situation and got all interest suspended whilst I entered into a special arrangement, paying what I could afford to.
I have paid off £7k in 2 1/2 years, and I will finally be debt free in July 2020!!! However that is if I carry on at my current rate, though hopefully if I manage to get a better paid job I will be able to increase my payments.
MSE has been a godsend, as it means I can still enjoy eating out (occasionally, and ALWAYS on a deal). Its also taken away the stigma of hunting down and using the best deals.
Being in debt is so soul-destroying, but seeing that I had paid £7k already has made me more determined. I only wish I had this mindset BEFORE I had gotten into debt, and it could have been £7k of savings in the bank .....
Also well done for where you have got to so far :T:T Keep looking back, especially on the low days to remind yourself where you were at, and how far you've come, as you say, it's not just about that figure coming down, it's about your mindset too. If you need any motivational boots up the proverbial to keep on track, drop me a pmEdit: Oh and another motivational tool is seeing that it can be done and working towards the day you can post on the Debt Free Roll of Honour!!
And you are SO very right about how MSE has changed the stigma attached to saving money/cutting back...................although sometimes I think some people go to the extreme, Boots toe seperators come to mind from a few years back  :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I can envisage many dates across the country now where both parties turn up with their 2 for 1 vouchers in the restaurant:D
