Milkmen - They can be cheaper

thats great that you're supporting a local business!:j
I've mantioned many times before that my DH is a milkman in a small local company - we live in the countryside so its an important service for a lot of elderly people. It is worrying that due to the current situation a lot of people will be looking to cut costs and may decide that their milkman is for the chop.
My DH is out at the crack of dawn in all weathers to provide a good service to his customers and I'd like to thank all those of you who remain loyal to their milkman:T:T:T
We get some pretty bad weather up here and not once has my milkman not turned up, it's lovely to find the milk sitting outside the back door when there's 4 inches of snow on the ground.
Many elderly people rely on the local milkman, they may only get a couple of pints a week so he has to rely on bigger orders from families to make a living.Dum Spiro Spero0 -
thanks Bitsy and Anguk!:T
most of his customers are very nice and appreciate him and he gets lots of gifts left out for him at Christmas which is really nice of them.Do what you love :happyhear0 -
I rang one of the large milk companies about 6 weeks ago. Gave them my order and all was arranged for them to start delivering milk the following Monday. Monday came, but no milk, Tuesday and Wednesday came and still no milk. I rang them again on the Wednesday afternoon and was told they had no record of my order, so I had to give her all the details again. She said she'd get in touch with my local depot and they would ring me and arrange delivery - still nothing:(
I'm going to try Creamline this week and hopefully I'll have better luck with them.
Just a quick question do you live in flats? i only ask as when i first ordered milk it never came, i phoned and they said they couldent get in my access door so early in the morning and could they have a key.
I love my milkman as i work long shifts and iratic shifts (i'm eating breakfash at 6am on day shift days and its always been delivered by then, On nights it's quite funny as he also delivers to the hospiral wrvs shop where i work so i often see him at about as i work in A&E next to the shop) and means no walking to shops for little things as i don't drive.
P.S
Any idea what i can do for christmas for him as i get it through milk and more so pay by direct debit (i'm not craft or cooking minded my mother ofter joked if it dident come out of a tin or packet i couldent cook it lol) do you think if i left him some money it an envelope that he would get to keep it as aposed to the big company that milkandmore is?
he has been so good this year even it the crappy weather we had in jan we were practly snowed in the milk came.0 -

yes he should get to keep it. My DHs customers leave him money in Christmas cards out on their doorsteps or small gifts of biscuits, wine or chocolates. His round is in the countryside so its safe to leave it out.
Maybe you could give it to him personally or failing that make sure that you put your details on the envelope so that they can mae sure it goes to the correct milkman.
thankyou for thinking of your milkie!:TDo what you love :happyhear0 -
We've been using our milkman for a couple of years now, since the day I finally went out to ask him how much milk was when I saw him delivering to an elderly lady across the road. We get 14 pints a week from him at 55p a pint and I know I can get eggs from him if need be.
Oddly, he doesn't deliver till the early afternoon but it's not really a problem for us. I've always got milk from the previous day in the fridge for breakfast. At this time of year it's cold enough outside for the milk to sit there till we get home, and in the summer I'm off uni and often here when he delivers. I end up feeling guilty as unless I hear him and go out to pay him, he often doesn't bother knocking. Most recently I owed him £49.50 just cos I hadn't seen him for so long  but he says he trusts me and he always gets the money in the end so as long as he's happy with it then I suppose I shouldn't be bothered!
The convenience is fantastic, we just do one big monthly shop with top-ups less than once a week for fresh yoghurts and fruit, so if we needed to go out and get that much milk regularly it would be such a pain in the rear. Neither of us drive, there's a little shop up the road and a Shell garage down the road but both are really overpriced.:heartpulsSpoiling my two baby girls with love - it's free and it's fun!:heartpuls
I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

more than the supermarket but I save money by not nipping to the shop for milk and spending £20!

Many elderly people rely on the local milkman, they may only get a couple of pints a week so he has to rely on bigger orders from families to make a living.
For all the above reasons and because I have occasionally had milk delivered before I have gone to bed, and it was on the doorstep last year without fail last winter even when temperature dropped under -15 and lower, I will continue to have milk from local dairy.
I take my hat off to them in this weather0 -
does anyone use Milk&More?
Just been looking at their website. It says you can change your order up to 9pm the night before. I was wondering if I had to have a regular daily/weekly order or could I just order as and when I feel like it? might sound silly, but I have memories as a child of the milk building up because we had the same order every day, so sometimes it was wasted and sometimes we ran out.
also do Milk & more collect the glass bottles and re-use them?weaving through the chaos...0 -

The only downside I've found it that the milk is pretty expensive compared with that purchased in a supermarket.Stompa0 -

DH and I order 2 pints on a Monday and a Wednesday and 3 pints on the Friday.
You put your glass bottles out the night before your order is due to be delivered and milky will take them away..
You can cancel, reduce or increase your order before 9pm the night before your delivery is due.
Hope this helps.:)Felines are my favourite

Yes, they do collect.
As to not having a regular order, I don't know. In our area they don't deliver every day anyway. We get deliveries Mon/Wed/Fri, presumably another area gets deliveries from the same milkman Tue/Thur/Sat. We have 2 pints each time, so 6/week. I top up with UHT skimmed milk, as I can always keep some in the larder for when needed. Our milkman was brilliant when we had the snow - didn't miss a delivery!0
