I am thinking of starting to use the milkman as OH does Shift Work and I don't drive it would save him a journey out after a 12hr shift, Plus I would like to support them. OH is against it as we are on a tight budget I just wondered what other things your milkmen deliver? Im wondering If I can persuade OH into it by arguing on the petrol saving if we could go shopping once a week or even a fortnight

Different milkmen/companys will have different stock to each other but as a general guide most would deliver eggs, juice, cheese, yoghurt, potato's,cream, biscuits, dairy crest will have a list on their website that would probably include a large selection of unexpected items such as garden products, pet food and cereals !! also you could try the milk and more site.

With regard persuading your OH i would say you certainly wont be getting a cheaper pint however perhaps the quality of product (British as opposed some shops) and hopefully good service would more than ofset the slightly higher costs.

semi is 58p per pint currently, I am assuming full fat is the same as a while back *before* prices went up, I swopped from full fat to semi and there was no difference in price.

Thanks for the info. Looked at unigate website. All going well as milk was on par, if not a few pence cheaper than tesco. That is, until I worked out I was looking at the 3day service and have to pay an extra £5.95 a month. Just not cost effective, but would be convenient.

looking at the dairy crest one as also delivery to me, they dont have there milk prices.

I dont mean to sound rude but your never going to find milk delivered cheaper than tesco, they sell at little profit (along with bread and newspapers) just to get people in store so they then buy a few other items and ends up being a £10-£20 pint of milk !!!, also a dairy has to run floats, pay roundsmen, and maintain a depot, the maths can only equal a higher price.

One thing i would point out is if you wanted a wall built it would cost you more to get a builder than do it yourself, however the chances are it would be of superior quality, i really dont think this is a far different situation, could your local milkman offer fresh british milk delivered to your door ? yes, can tesco ? doubtfull although they could deliver at a fiver a time !!

I asked our local milkman how much for a price of semi skimmed and it has just gone up to 60p a pint.
I would love to support him and buy from him but am living on such a tight budget at the moment that I am buying 4 pints from Iceland at £1.20.

I would not go back to delivered milk. The people across the road have it delivered, I see it sitting there and the truck that delivers it is not refridgerated. I remember delivered milk having a short 'shelf life'.

I buy a mix of fresh and long life supermarket milk. I can rely on the supermarket fresh milk to last a week. By freezing a carton, I can have fresh milk for 2 weeks without having to buy more.

By having cartons of long life milk in the cupboard, and a pack of dried milk, I never run out.
