All i can say is our milky is fab, usually the milk is here when I get home from work in the wee small hours - perhaps my milkman doesn't like early mornings so does it before he goes to bed?!

    quote]

my hubby starts work at 2.30 AM to deliver his milk, some start at midnight!
Because he has about 350 customers(mainly in the countryside) some dont get it till mid morning but there's nothing he can do about it! In the countryside they leave out cool boxes for him to put it in.

I live in the middle of the countryside, must be why my milky is so early. Don't need a coolbox tho as he comes so early! Got my new delivery of Jersey milk coming this Friday - I'm getting excited about my porridge, how sad!

Hi Kingofclare - I would love our milk to have a layer of cream on the top

Gone are the days am afraid. I can remember when we were kids and we used to have full fat milk. I can always remember that the top quater of the bottle was cream.

The problem is these days is that the milk is standardised (ie. cream is evenly distributed throughout the bottle)

In regards to the query about the justification of a price rise here's the wording (word for word) from the Dairy Crest leaflet:

    Dear Customer

Dairy Crest is commited to supplying you with British milk only - no imports. We increased our prices in 2007 so that we could use that additional money to encourage farmers to increase the supply of British milk and to secure it for you. All of the 2007 increase was passed to our supplying farmers, none of it went towards other increased costs within our business.

You will have noticed the rising fuel prices at the forecourts and been told of higher costs by your gas and electricity suppliers. These increased costs, coupled with increased employment costs, have strongly impacted on our business.

We have tried our best to absorb as many of these inflationary costs as possible, but unfortunatly, despite our best efforts, we cannot absorb them all. Having delayed as long as we could, we now have to pass some of these costs on to you. Accordingly, with effect from April 27th 2008 our milk price will increase by 4 pence per pint.

Many of our customers appreciate the role of our milkmen in the local communities in which they serve and how hard they work to provide you with the best possible service. At this time of rising costs we hope that you will understand our reasons for this price increase and continue to support your milkman.

Hope this clarifies a few points for you all. Right am off to bathe my fingers in some ice cold water after that essay :rotfl:

    Regards

    Steve

I have had a milkman for a couple of years now, and its great, milk was the one item I would always run out of or forget, I have it delivered on a Monday and a Friday and when my daughter is home from Uni on a Wednesday. I pay once a fortnight and I pay 1.09 for 4 pints, very happy to pay this as we now never run out, plus it is from a local farm.

whilst i dont know for sure i would imagine all milk in this country would be standardised, this means that it has a maximum of 3.5% fat in it so in theory could affect the amount of cream at the top of the bottle, that said the full cream and channel island milk on my float usually has a creamy layer at the top. I think that perhaps standardised and homogonised milk has become confused here, homogonisation basically spreads the fat evenly throughout the milk, you will find this in the plastic cartons sold in shops etc.

This was explained to me by our milkman as being due to "a shortage of British cows"!

I suppose paying the dairy farmers a bit extra is to encourage them to maintain their herds. I must admit growing up in Somerset I just got used to seeing cows in every other field. But they are actually quite a rare sight now.

I am thinking of starting to use the milkman as OH does Shift Work and I don't drive it would save him a journey out after a 12hr shift, Plus I would like to support them. OH is against it as we are on a tight budget I just wondered what other things your milkmen deliver? Im wondering If I can persuade OH into it by arguing on the petrol saving if we could go shopping once a week or even a fortnight

    Just a general observation ....

Have a heart if your milkman puts his prices up .... the supermarkets have done this.

    Two main reasons ....

Cost of feed has pretty much doubled in the past 12 months.

Cost of fuel has gone through the roof!!!

Mine has not increased the price of a pinta, yet (50p for Gold Top) but I'm expecting it ....
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)
