How to handle outside lane hoggers?

Basically there is no need to be an idiot when you meet another one.0

I never flash or tailgate anyone.
You won't achieve anything.
I would have done exactly what you did (without the flashining or tailgating) and would have undertaken them after a couple of minutes if it looked for definite that they were just sitting in that lane.
Just like you, I would have got past them, but unlike you, I wouldn't have been "chased" or felt worried or stressed about it (as you obviously do or otherwise you wouldn't have posted).
Road rage doesn't ever, ever get you anywhere other than in trouble.
Calm yourself down. Or you could end up hurt, or even worse."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

Spot on. The fact that they went straight to the outside lane immediatley tags them as one to avoid.
I once read a report by a senior traffic officer that said the following, "one day you will meet the person that you will cause you to have an accident, it depends on YOUR speed at the time how bad that accident is". Live by that and you tend to keep away from people who hog the outside lane.Pants0 -

Keep well away from idiots on the road whenever possible, if that means that you arrive a couple of minutes late, at least you have arrived safely.0

I did overtake on the inside and I'm not normally too phased by that but in this instance two cars travelling together full of young lads was a situation that I felt could escalate (too many road rage incidents recently up here).
I had had a long day and wanted to get home as swiftly and safely as possible and decided that they were not going to spoil my day. I even decided flashing my lights would probably just get them more irate.
The only saving grace was that with a Punto 4 up they didn't have the ability to give chase effectively (although their demenour suggested otherwise)
So I broke two laws (again not something that normally worries me) overtaking on the inside and the speeding off into the distance but this is a piece of road I tend to give a bit of respect to.
Their attitude, was in my opinion let's have a game and I could easily have got myself boxed in if they really fancied playing silly bu$$ers and where could that have ended.0 -

Flashing lights in this way on the motorway I travel on a lot seems to mean to the person in front "I want a fight" or "I want you to brake test me". Definitely not worth it.0 -
When this happens to me I simply slow down, let them go ahead (hopefully to land in a ditch somewhere). I have no desire to be involved in any incident they may cause.
On the other side of the coin, whenever I've used the third lane for overtaking (and only overtaking) I've always had some !!!! in a saloon sitting on my bumper within a few seconds of entering the lane. I tend to maintain that speed as I simply don't feel safe or comfortable going above 80 just to please some idiot in a company car. If they flash their lights I take it to mean there is a speed camera ahead so decrease to 70 on my speedo. That always pleases
Is the third lane reserved for 4x4s, Audis and BMWs or something? :rolleyes:0 -
