Now this is me! :D but lately I've been really giving the whole baking thing a whirl.. with a little bit of success but mostly horrific outcomes!! I've spent more money on food over the last 3 weeks than I ever did!!! and I'm trying to be good here!! I recon it's because I've been stocking up on the basics and buying lots of herbs etc.

How do you make hot cross buns? I may give it a go, although judging by my bread and pizza bases god only know's how they'll turn out. :o

I have made one big giant one from the recipe in somerfield magazine, better get it out of the oven now actually!
I made a kind of pastry out of flour, water and veg oil for the cross. It cut its own way into the top! LOL;)
My Italian neighbour gave me a 'colomba' whicn is a huge Italian easter cake with dried peel inside, and sugar and almonds on top.

Put hot cross bun mix in breadmaker last night...didn't seem to rise much. Left to proove overnight...only very slight increase in size by the morning.
Put in the oven to cook.
    Came out like little pebbles!
    Kids still eating them tho.

You could make them without spices. They weren't always spiced.
Use sultanas or raisins or any dried fruit instead of currants.

Dead yeast? Too much sugar? (retards rising) Too much cinnamon? (ditto) Proving place too cold?

Sorry, could be any number of reasons. Do you have a pic, or have the kids already eaten them all?

  • An American friend of mine swears hot cross buns have a cross made of icing on the top. She even says she's had them in the UK! But I have never seen icing-topped hot cross buns, only the normal pastry topped ones. Anyone shed any light on this?

Nope I have never seen iced ones either - how would you toast them! They do sound lovely though.....
