As far as I know they ARE a sweet, fruity bread roll, but if you just want them soft then possibly just changing the cooking method may help? Perhaps you could try cooking for a shorter time, then covering them with a towel when they come out to keep soft, or brushing crusts with butter like I do with my bread to keep it soft.
this recipe seems to have good ratings

What recipes have you tried?
I've never actually made them but I would think to make something similar to the shop-bought ones, you'd need to make a rich dough that included eggs and butter, a bit similar to brioche, and possibly to bake them for slightly longer at a lower temperature which should help keep them from going too crusty.
Delia's recipe looks quite nice, although I'd rub the butter into the flour rather than melting it.0 -
im trying to find a recipe for hot cross buns, similar to the ones you buy in the shops
all the recipes ive tried so far are too bread based, so it tastes more like a sweet roll, with a crusty outside and fruity inside
any ideas

Hi flea72 - I agree with you, I've tried to make Hot cross buns for years now and the family always end up asking for shop bought ones because they are more "doughy", never seem to get them like that so have just given up.:o Will keep an eye on this thread to see if anyone can come up with a recipe where they come out nice and soft.
I try to make everything we eat from Scratch but sometimes I get told "the shop ones are better", faggots are another thing I've tried to make a few times but flavour not as good."WASTE NOT, WANT NOT!"GC for OH, myself, DD18 & DD16 includes Toiletries, cleaning stuff & Food.

I really fancy some hot cross bun loaf but it's obviously out of season now so none in the shops!
Anyone have a good recipe they can share?
