BB - that was a lovely post.

Becky, I see where you're coming from (kind of.. :p) but I'm not sure you can say that one achievement is greater than the other, because I reckon me completing the Leeds 10k meant as much to me as a world record does to an elite runner. I lay in bed grinning to myself that night because of what I'd achieved. Wonder if they do too?

My son wants to come running with me because he wants to be a super-speedy superhero - inspiring him means just as much to me as inspiring a new generation of runners does to Mo Farrah. Sentimental maybe, but true. :)

    (((hugs)))and you did it anyway!

I had a few moments of ohmyGodeveryoneisgoingpastmewhyIamhere!

that was embarrassing but hey I stuck it out!

WE did do it, we both finished and we weren't last hun :D

It was probably the first time in 20 years I'd been anywhere except my garden in shorts. Plus I have this 'thing' about running in public.....if you remember, it was so bad I bought the treadie. I'm ashamed to say my nerves rubbed off on DD, who spent a lot of the Saturday morning in tears, panicking she wouldnt finish :o

    When's the next one

  • I think anyone achieving their dreams is inspirational, its the drive and dedication that are inspiring not neccessarily the outcome.

That was me today, everyone went passed me at some point, but I thought what the hell, if I get to the end of this without dying I'll be happy

I have to say, seeing some of the learners who arrive worried and scared for their first basic literacy or numeracy class with all the things swirling in their head about going back into education and then - not that long afterwards - smiling and confident after gaining level 2 certificate which is going to make the world of difference to them and their future job prospects makes me feel so proud for them. They've really had to work their damned hardest to get there for lots of reasons and it is probably more of an achievement than for me just being able to pick up most things academically, 'do it' and pass.

I guess it's about overcoming the struggles of life to achieve and those who achieve anything despite other stuff going on deserve that extra little pat on the back.

For me, the greater achievement would be someone who hasn't run in their life and then does something like a 10k. I would see doing a 5k as probably the greatest achievement of my life physically as it's something I've never done and even the thought of it scares me stupid. :o

I think if someone can get over their fears, worries and lack of self confidence to brave the watching faces of the general public when they walk, jog, collapse over the line at the end then that to me is an enormous achievement. I know I'd cry if I ever achieved a 5k :o

I think we all have something we physically/mentally/academically are genetically made to excel in at some level or another (for me it is cooking, probably my general 'braininess' :o as people often seem to point out on facebook when they find me from being at school with them and playing the flute) and whilst people who break world records (in athletics for example) are to be hugely applauded for giving their total life dedication to, they were probably naturally good at it to start with and so - through encouragement, luck, or being pushed by parents - ended up following this 1 goal to its outcome with all the hard work which then followed.

I think all of you who have done runs etc are absolutely amazing and I :T:T:T you all - I am in total awe. However, I have a sneaking little extra :T for spud who was so scared to do the Leeds 10k and whilst I am so proud of you all, I was sooooooo proud that spud finished because she really didn't think she could.

Maybe they are both as great as each other - but for different reasons

You are so right BB. My ex is a great cook and despite many many hours of him trying to teach me to boil an egg without burning down the kitchen my cooking is horrible.

On the other hand, I'm a pretty decent musician and I spent many many hours trying to teach him. He thinks he's a great singer, actually he is shocking. The thought of him drumming puts my teeth on edge... shudder.

It goes to show that we all have talents at something and just because you are good at one thing doesn't mean you are good at everything. Even if some people think they are :rotfl:

I know who I would rather be around and who gets my vote for greater acheivement. It isn't always about the results, it's what you have to overcome just to make that start. So, in answer to your question, whose acheivement is greater. I would choose the girls and guys here, spud, sammy, snags, bunny, sally and all of the others who have got up and put on their trainers and made that first step a million times over this mo person any day of the week.

Aww, you edited me in! :D:kiss:

By the way hun, when are you travelling to Weybiza? I'm off work on the Saturday now so will travel down first thing, and thinking of going home Thursday - is that okay? Don't want to overstay our welcome. :)

I knew it was a mistake naming names :) I first thought of spud, then thought I can't just say spud because I really mean she sums up every one of you. So then I started digging my own grave :D I see many many edits coming up.

I am travelling down on saturday, we will leave here sometime in the morning and get there just after lunch I guess.

You can stay until the next saturday if you like, as I've said I will be bored rigid on my own so you are doing me a favour. I do love my kids, I really do. But I have a 13 year old who can only have a conversation in the break between tunes on her ipod. An 11 year old who asks me 5 times a minute what time is it and a baby who can just manage gagaga.

So, yes, your company will be more than welcome :rotfl:

My inpsiration - my big sister!

Every day just getting up and putting her shoes on is like running a 10K - she actually dreams of running but in fact can hardly walk. (that must be such a shame to dream of running and not be able to) so I run every race for her.
