Did my back a bit of a mischief, bending over the bath, but well worth it! Haven't tried the big one yet. Did you do half at a time or did you come up with another cunning plan?

Couldn't get more than about 6 inches of it into the bath unfortunately, so.... what I did was prop the blind in the detergent bath and then turned it a few times to give it a good coating of the solution right through.

Left it for a bit. turning it every 15 mins or so so that the bits that wouldn't go in the tub got a good shower, if not a bath, then finished with a good scrub. It looks much better.

Now that it is dry I can see that the cords have not come up as clean as the 2 smaller blinds which had a really good soak. I think next time I'll try to find a way of trying a well of detergent solution onto the sections where the cords are...

Racy goes off to put thinking hat on. Kitchen towel and clingfilm maybe?

BTW, ditto re the back... ouch icon9.gif

  • Hi - I hang my long blinds on the washing line and spray cleaner on them, wipe the slats and rinse with a hose/ pressure washer. Not something I do very often though.....
Small ones I wash in the bath.....
I hate cleaning blinds ...... might get roller blinds next time...

Roller blinds are horrible to clean, trust me! Mine went funny aswell. Bloomin' things. I prefer the vertical blinds, take them down and pop into a pillow case, tie it and throw them in the washing machine (saying that some don't like it so tested a spare piece first as a friend shrank hers! )
One day I might be more organised...........

Use car shampoo - that was a tip from the company that takes away my blinds to clean them I don't usually pay for something I can do myself but the blinds come back like new, including the cords. Also they remove them from the windows and put them back the same day (after they are cleaned!)

In our front room and dinning room we have those blinds that are like metal strips and you pull the string and they open and close (cannot remember what they are called :o )

How do I clean them They are filthy because we have had the kitche re-done this week and we have had to pull out a fire place and we got soot everywhere.

Should I take them down and put them in the bath to clean or do I have to wipe each strip clean (will take ages !!)

    Can anyone help

    Hi Tashja,

Are they venetian blinds? If so these older threads should help:

    Cleaning venetian blinds?

    cleaning venetian blinds.......

I'll merge your thread with those ones later to keep all the suggestions together.

I wondered if anyone had any hints on how to clean an aluminium blind (I think it's a venetian blind, the one with the separate 'slats'). There's one in the kitchen of my rented flat and it's so filthy it's annoyed me ever since I moved in. I've tried wiping it down but as well as this being very tedious I ended up cutting my fingers to ribbons. It's about 5ft long and I don't really have access to any outside space, so if anyone can suggest a safe way of cleaning it indoors then I'd be eternally grateful! :)

OH usually puts our one in the bath and washes it, but you have to try and dry it off as much as poss to stop it rusting and re-hang it with the slats open (to let in light and let air round it to finish drying ) ;)
working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?
