Thanks for that, penrhyn, but what i was getting at was, for existing Sky customers who are no longer in their 12 month contract, to sign up for broadband effectively (sort of) commits them to another 12 months TV as the BB has a min 12 month term and you can't have BB without the TV? I accept you won't have to pay any penalty for the TV cancellation but you will for the BB. I'm thinking specifically of people who's finances take a nosedive (redundancy etc) during the 12 month BB term and can no longer afford the TV package but probably can afford the BB. Can't have one without the other. A problem.

    You are quite correct.
Its something worth watching out for with Sky and also when seeking upgrades, or any change of service from your ISP, all of a sudden you are commited to 12 or more months.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

It is worth finding out what is the cheapest alternative and then threatening to leave. I was paying £14.99 pm and found that Talktalk were offering £6.99 pm for 8 meg unlimited downloads and unlimited calls. The cancellations dept asked me what I was being offered and matched it!!

    which cancellation dept? aol?

i did that before but that was because i really wanted to cancel it at the time, and they reduced it from £17-18 a month to £7 a month but how can they now want to increase it right back up again? :( totally confused how they can do that.

where is everyone planning to go to? im so not computer minded about all those packages that they offer. i just look at the prices lol.

Another rural, long time AOL user (and despite poor software, have been very happy with them otherwise). Received the dreaded email a little while ago. So much for the general policy in UK to make broadband more readily available, especially in rural areas. All price hikes like this do is put people even more off the service from whatever provider. Need to give situation lots of thought and see if I have any alternatives. I have loads of Family History related emails stored on my AOL account and dread to think how long it will take me to record details from all of those if I have to move provider. As far as I can see, I can't access my stored stuff just by logging on to AOL using my AOL addy.... I need to also be using my AOL software for all my stored stuff. Trust this to all happen over a lot of peoples holiday periods. Hassle I and many others could no doubt do without.

Double drat, just realised, as I don't like wi-fi in home and my broadband is through an ADSL router, most packages on offer at mo are for wi-fi........more hassle!

Just a warning but if you are rural and only getting 2mb from AOL it may be the case that it will cost more than the £9.99 you are paying now for an equivalent service if you leave aol. My exchange (ruralish) is not unbundled and while o2 etc quote me nice low numbers at the start of their spiel, when they input my phone no and postcode the price escalates quite a lot! I would certainly check exactly what you will be paying before you move from aol. Bear in mind also, that the download limit will almost certainly be capped by your new provider and if you are a heavy user this might end up costing you more money or inconvenience.
(I do use aol, I am not their biggest fan, but am only with them as I cannot get an equivalant service for cheaper)

    It's only a game

Has anyone else received this polite message from AOL?

At AOL Broadband we’re always looking to offer you the best possible service and value. We were one of the first providers to introduce a flat rate broadband connection, and we now have over a million broadband customers enjoying faster speeds thanks to our automatic upgrades.

However, due to the increased cost in maintaining a broadband service in your area, there will be a change to your monthly broadband subscription. From your next bill after the 21st July, your broadband package will cost £17.99 a month. This price change will happen automatically with no interruption to your service

I'm currently paying £9.99 a month for a 2mb service and so this is an increase of £8 a month or £96 a year. After nearly 10 years with AOL I think what they're probably saying in a round about way is we don't really want you as a customer anymore and it's time to find another provider.

AOL, sonce being taken over by CarPhoneWarehouse are THE WORST BB provider around.

Ask AOL for your MAC code, as regardless of your length of contract remaining (if any), they are changing the terms to your detriment and you can cancel wihtout penalty.

Call O2, give them your MAC code, and get 10 times faster for £8 per month cheaper. Also use Quidco for the £70 cash back.
