Is this true about Windows 7...

Ok, so just to clarify for everyone. It has turned out that most of the above information is all false, and there will be no upgrade versions of Windows 7. I'll start a new thread about this.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Microsoft has said that Windows 7 will be offered in Europe without the Internet Explorer browser on board. A Commission spokesman dismissed Microsoft's claim that it was taking the action to comply with European laws.
"The essential point of our case is consumer choice," said the spokesman.
"We would want to look extremely closely at the terms under which Microsoft is making Internet Explorer available to computer manufacturers," he said.
"If the effect of the technical separation of Windows and Internet Explorer is neutralised by particular terms and conditions they offer to manufacturers to install Internet Explorer, they're no better off."
The preferred remedy for Europe, he said, was to offer users a screen when they first switch on Windows 7 that gives them a choice between IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Opera.
"For them to claim that this is somehow imposed by the Commission or is going to resolve the problem with the Commission is far from clear," he said.

Great plan...maybe Renault garages ought to give the option to have an Aston instead before you drive away?
This is just going to add confusion for the masses...those of us who understand the benefits of a different browser already use one..I just want users to be able to turn on a PC and use it... not be given choices they won't understand.Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -

Not to start a Mac vs PC debate, but this is one area where Microsoft could learn a thing or two from Apple.
Anyone buying a Mac from the 8th June onwards will qualify for a free upgrade to OS X 10.6 when it's released in September.
Existing OS X 10.5 users will pay $29 for a single user upgrade, or $49 for a family pack which allows you to install it on up to 5 Macs.
There are no Starter, Premium, or Ultimate versions, and there is no 32-bit version. There's no activation, validation, or even any licence keys.
It's very very simple.0 -
Ah..are Apple also being forced by the courts to ship the OS with MS internet explorer and a host of other competitors products...or leave out their own? What was their solution? Not to start a Mac vs PC debate, but this is one area where Microsoft could learn a thing or two from Apple.

For once, I agree with you about the Mac! Microsoft have made a complete pigs ear of this one. (Sorry pigs, didn't mean to offend you!:p)Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

I see your point, but Apple haven't fallen foul of the EU just yet. Perhaps they will as Macs get more popular. But I seem to recall that a court in the US ruled that Apple didn't have a monopoly in the "Mac market" as there's no Mac market outside Apple, so it could be that the EU would reach a similar conclusion. If they licensed OS X to other manufacturers, it might be a very different story.
Regardless, the situation is just as confusing in the US, far beyond the reach of EU regulators. The many different versions of Windows are confusing for consumers, and Windows 7 is too expensive. Apple have long been over-charging for evolutionary updates to OS X, and they've finally got their pricing right with Snow Leopard. Microsoft really missed a trick with what is, let's face it, an evolutionary upgrade to Vista.0 -
Theres an interesting article here on windows 7 and OS X upgrades..

I'm thinking of buying a Toshiba laptop from Laptops Direct (which has Vista Home Premium). Do I need to check with Toshiba or Laptops Direct or both or neither before I purchase? If Toshiba, how on earth do you do that? Link from Windows website takes you to a broken link on Toshiba's site!0
