    Unfortunately it's not as simple as a "free" upgrade.

    If you buy a PC with Vista Home Premium (not Basic), Business or Ultimate between the 26th of June and the 31st of January 2010, you can upgrade for a "nominal" cost set by the manufacturer. To do this you need to contact the manufacturer.

    If you buy a RETAIL copy of Vista the same applies, however you will have to contact Microsoft and pay P&P to get it.

    Upgrade path is:
    Home Premium -> Home Premium,
    Business -> Professional,
    Ultimate -> Ultimate.

    You will need to show your Vista key AND your receipt which shows the date of purchase.

    This information will go here - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/upgradeoffer - However this site only comes live on the 26th.

    This information is 100% correct from Microsoft's retail training site - however none of the consumer stuff goes live until the upgrade offer is in effect so people won't stop buying PC's until the upgrade offer comes in.

    I'm currently looking at laptops. I've read that Vista is a bigger strain on system resources than XP. Will Windows7 be the same, or require even more power?

    I've narrowed it down between two laptops, Acer Aspire 5536 with Vista Basic and Acer Aspire 5735 with Vista Premium, so this could sway my decision.

    Windows 7 runs a lot faster than Vista for me, and a little bit faster than XP.

    Windows 7 is based off Vista - but from what i've seen it seems to run much better.

    XP runs ok with 1GB of RAM - Vista doesn't. 7 runs ok - not amazing, but fast enough for me to actually recommend a PC with 1GB of RAM running 7.

    According to some in depth magazine tests the RC is slower than XP Pro but faster than some version Vista on comparable hardware, but it depends a lot on what functionality is active, background apps and so forth. PC Pro have run a lot of articles on it from a technical perspective.

    any (except the real bargain basement) laptop built in the last couple of years should run vista or 7 with relative ease.

    It's about the same as Vista, resource-wise.

    Windows 7 is a tiny bit faster for some things, and not faster at all for others.

    So I assume my XP, but Vista capable laptop will run Windows 7 with no problems? I've even up'ed the RAM to 4GB! :)

    You seem to be pleasingly knowledgeable about this forthcoming upgrade!

    Would you know what would happen for factory/manufacturer refurbished Vista-installed computers/laptops sold by a dealer? Would these also qualify for the 'almost free' upgrade to the corresponding version of Windows 7 from the manufacturer?

    Thanks!
