Is this true about Windows 7...

That it goes "live" friday, and if you buy a computer with Vista on it from Friday onwards then you get free uograde to W7 when it's released?

I hope it is and also glad i held off on ordering my computer tomorrow.:j

I think it's from the 1st of July that if you buy a computer with Windows Vista and the manufacturer is enrolled in the upgrade scheme then you are able to get a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it's released, or if not you may have to pay a small amount depending on their terms. It's not a blanket scenario, so you should check before you make a purchase.

Ah ok thanks, i don't mind a small charge, but hopefully not being charged full price.

The Windows 7 Team Blog talks about this, but the announcement date for the qualification for a free upgrade to Windows 7 (when it comes out on 22 October) is not yet defined. Other people have suggested 1st July as the announcement date, but until it's really announced it is all speculation... (See the final comment on the first page of comments, dated 2nd June: "we will be announcing details regarding the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program - mentioned in the above blog post - at a later date. Stay tuned as it will be of interest to you." )

Just to hijack this thread re the XP compatibility mode, I read somewhere recently that this will only function on certain later/higher powered Core 2 Duo chips and above, any info about this? know it's just a VPC session with some sort of coherence added so XP apps can appear native in Win 7 so I was surprised to read this, especially as I have a P4 laptop running XP Pro and a VPC on Win 2000 for testing on a client system (who is still on 2000!).

Ed Bott is your friend: "How many Intel CPUs will fail the XP Mode test in Windows 7?"

And also Why all the fuss about XP mode?

"Exiting" as in moving to Ubuntu (say)? Or merely "exciting"?! ;)

Well done for spotting the typographic error. I was just starting on my first coffee of the morning.
