Debt Free & Fat Free Wannabees??

  • I'm not getting involved in the Atkins arguments. My only experience is through a friend who followed it for 4 weeks and then 'slipped up' by eating a sandwich. She ended up with horrendous stomach cramps & in hospital. It was as if her body had forgotton how to cope with carbohydrates. Very scary! I will never follow or recommend any 'diet' that limits food groups - a healthy, balanced diet is just that - balanced!!

On the good note - 2lbs lost in my first week :-)

Welcome back Amos. Interesting discussion you guys have got, but I definitely won't be joining the raw meat diet :D
lol thanks, I must admit that eating raw meat is a bit too, err, natural for even me at this stage lol. _pale_

What gives anyone the right to treat you badly? No one should be allowed to do that! The fact that you say he is perfect doesn't excuse putting other people down, especially when they are meant to be your friend. He sounds anything but perfect to be honest, one to be avoided. It seems a shame that you describe him as perfect, do you not see that he is being horrible to you? If SS's well meaning (if direct) comments upset you so much, what are this guys comments doing to you?
He doesn't treat any of his friends badly, but I doubt unless you knew him I could ever explain so trying seems pretty futile. He has the right to say what he wants because he can and he's earned my respect to do so, and I suppose you've just got to know him to understand why, whereas other people's misguided, rude and judgemental comments about somebody they know nothing about certainly aren't welcome. Anyway this guy's so thin he's like 2-dimensional lol.

I was looking in to those BMI scales things, they sound pretty good. I've always found normal household scales to be too inaccurate which is annoying, sometimes you can weigh yourself a few times one after another and results can be off by a few lbs each time, even if they are correctly calibrated. I really do want some accurate scales that tell the truth the first time, the whole time and every time! Salter scales seem to be the worst offenders IMHO :( I think the only reliable scales are the old ones we used to have in school, like the ones in Little Britain's fat fighters group. Where can you get them from? lol

Just a point MS_London was it you thinking about buying one of those scales with the body fat percentage? I've got one of them and rarely use at but...wait for it....my percentage last time I used it was39!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How scary is that! It makes me clinically obese even if my BMI doesnt :0)

Hellooooo!! I was thinking about it, but never got around to it :0) - I think that would be motivation for me, as although I might not be losing lbs, it would be good to know that my body fat percentage was going down... - or perhaps it would scare me too much? :0) Which make/model did you get?

    Hello cuddlies

I've had a lovely day today, healthy eating all day long and went for a lovely walk on the beach this afternoon - weather was lovely, warm sand between my toes - cheered me up nicely!

    Hope you're all okay

    Hi
I am following the Weight watchers diet (loosely!) In true DFW fashion i have offered to help out at the meetings and now get in for free, also i get a small sum based on the number of members that attend.
Also i am using the grocery challenge to cut down what i eat. I am trying to make what whould have done 3 portions into 4 portions etc and have decided that as i am addicted to sweet food, baking small buns is better for me than a chocolate bar (and it's lower in points) so i try and do most of my cooking myself. I had gotten into a very bad habit of getting a take away at the end of a long day at work, now i am trying to batch bake and have stuff in the freezer ready for when i don't feel like cooking.
As for exercise i am a bit of a couch potato, i need to find my push bike from under all the rubbish in the cupboard so i can cycle to local places (which will also save me petrol money)
Good luck to you all, what are you doing? I guess some are doing Atkins, are there any other plans being followed?

Evening all. I am a very happy bunny today. I have just been to my Slimming World class (well, I normally go on a Monday but I went to centre parcs for 4 days), and I have stayed the same!!

Now I know that may not sound very good - but i assure you for me with 4 days away with friends and family that don't have to watch their weight - that is very very good :j

I did have a few naughty bits, but tried to do lots of exercise to compensate. I thought I would probably be sad that I may have put on 2 or 3 lbs.

    have a good week.

    Hi Amos,

I like a good debate too, but I am afraid we're in danger of highjacking this splendid thread. Neither of us will ever convince the other. For me, there are too many great big question marks about long term health effects, and I love carbs too much to drop them. But from your previous posts I am guessing that for you, long term health is of secondary importance to being thin.

Personally I don't particularly care about being 'natural'. I mean, Europeans 20,000 years ago had a life expectancy of 30 years or so. Who knows whether their diet was 'healthy'? They didn't live long enough to get cancer or heart disease. All natural selection required of them was to live long enough to reproduce.

Over Easter I went to a natural history museum. Having seen some of the exhibits in the parasites section, I do not recommend eating raw meat. Seriously!

As far as my nutritionist was concerned, she had plenty more to say about couch potatoes than Atkins dieters. But whereas couch potatoes are under no illusions, a lot of people think the Atkins diet is nutritionally sound.

But, much as I love discussing this, I think we should let the topic go for the time being. :)

    Re: Body fat scales.

I had a Tanita when I lived in Australia and loved it. It was very accurate for weight (agreeing very closely with the doctor's scales). Body fat percentage was not accurate. If you had a BF of 39% you would almost certainly be well under that, but as you lost weight the BF % dropped proportionally. It was good to be able to tell whether I was losing fat or muscle but the actual figure didn't represent a real amount, IYKWIM. It was also greatly effected by dehydration so it was important to measure at the same time of day. Even going to the toilet was enough to change the BF measurement significantly!

I miss my Tanita so much in fact that a couple of days ago I ordered another. Here is how my MSE lessons came into play: I found a model I liked and did some online research. It cost about the same on Boots.com as anywhere else, plus they were having a 700 bonus points special. I used a code I found on the codes board to get an extra 500 points for a £50+ spend. I got free postage for an order greater than £45, and finally I did it through Quidco to get a 4.5% cashback.

I love it when money saving and fat losing come together in harmony! :T

I'm glad that we can both agree on that :) I think I'm argumentative by nature, but you make some really good points and I haven't totally ignored everything you said, actually it's spurned me on to look in to some of the things you mentioned :)

Not sure about the model must check when I get home. It also shows Water percentage and you can prgramme each member of your household into it so you never have to re-set it. I don't think the bodyfat percentage motivates me much but everyone is different. To me, all I want is to wear some nice clothes without my beer belly hanging out front and my hips flapping over the sides :D Here's hoping..Incidentally had a little chat with Grimelda, and it turns out we both don't really eat much sweet stuff but man do we eat big portions. Well I know I do. So really, does anyone have any tips on portion control? I never seem to be able to cook less, and I hate waste so often I freeze stuff but because it's there....I eat a LOT of it!

Use smaller plates....that's what I did....and after some initial whingeing even OH is happy with it....says he feels much better after meals now (as in not bloated!)

Greetings one and all and thanks to Amos and Grimelda for a very interesting discussion - very persuasive, both of you! Well done to everyone else who lost weight.....good efforts all round.
