I should have been more specific and said "unhealthy" refined carbs and not the healthy ones found in veg etc.

It's ok I kind of think that most people don't see a difference between the bad refined carbs and the good ones that occur naturally (and of course are important in the diet). Most good carbs also come attached to lots of fibre which is also essential for a healthy diet too, so it's very important to eat these.

With refined (man made) carbohydrates, the effect on the blood-sugar level is shocking, it's this constant insulin production that can actually GIVE people type-2 diabetes. Still a lot of people think you only get it if you're born with it :-O Not exactly the case, by being a sugar junkie you can put your insulin production up the crapper and then have to start taking regular injections

Because good carbs (not refined, and includes polyols) as well as ketones don't have much of an effect on the blood-sugar level, lots of diabetics are actually able to stop taking medication after starting on a low-carb diet like Atkins/GI diet etc.

Also something that really annoys me is hydrogenated oils. There are nasty things and extremely unhealthy. Yet again, all the hydrogenated oils you consume are man made. The cause the bad cholesterol and increase your risk of cardiac arrest. Avoid these like plague  You will find them in nearly every man made thing you eat (chocolate, crisps, puddings etc. etc.)

Saturated fat, however, is a rather misunderstood beast. For years the government's advice has been to cut fat out of your diet. It was a good decision, if the science behind it was correct. Yes, it can leave you more prone to heart attacks but there's a reason. When people started first conducing research in to low carb diets, they first didn't understand that saturated fats can work in conjunction with other things you eat to make them bad. If you mix saturated fat and carbohydrates in your diet, it turns really nasty and again you suffer from a higher risk of heart attack. So you either need to remove carbohydrates or saturated fat from your diet. The scientists mistakenly went with saturated fat. So everyone loaded up on carbs and we all got given the message fat = bad! However, on the flip side, if you remove carbohydrates yet consume saturated fat, you will find your cholesterol level actually drops! If you eat carbs, your cholesterol level will most likely rise!

Saturated fat is natural and very common, and on it's own is healthy. Carbs, or the majority of those you eat, are man made don't forget.

Can you see the pattern forming yet? Natural = good, man made = bad. My diet on Atkins is 40% fat and my bad cholesterol level dropped to a very low 3.9 (the governments recommended safe level is 5.0)

I'm not even going to start on bleached white flour vs. wholegrains, the fact that a lot of "brown" bread is made of re-bleached white flower, bowel cancer and so forth or this really would turn in to a monumental lecture lol :-\

    Food for thought? :D

Ok in for a penny in for a pound.............not only do i have alot of work to do on my debts but i have also got alot of weight to lose. So here i am joining you guys :D

OK i will be completely honest i weigh about 5 stone over weight. After my second child i began to pile the weight on firstly because the stress of his birth and the discovery of all the medical problems etc he had sent me into a depressed state, of course i had to focus on him so a kept my depression to myself and just ate and ate. He was so very ill (they didn't even think he would make it through his first year) plus we where either in hospital or we where unable to go out with him as his immunity was so bad, then as he got older he developed physical disablities which meant that he could not be out alot especially in the colder weather, so not only was i eating more my excercise became extremely restricted. (this time was also when our money problems really began  )

So the weight piled on and here i am LOL, i want to lose the weight for health reasons rather than anything else and its great to see all your creative ways for doing it for free.

So fingers crossed, stomach in, cupboards de-junked and away i go :rotfl:

Welcome QueenB, to the nicest thread on MSE!!! :D
I must have overdone it yesterday, today I could hardly manage walking to the bus stop let alone doing a mile!!! :( Well I suppose it's all this extra "insulation" I am carrying around, I have to take it slower and start with a couple of miles - 3 miles a day...
Have resisted temptation though!! :D No C******** today either!!!! Now it has become a bad word!! ;)
Going to do my schedule for the next 2 months now, have exams coming up and have to study for those, plus have to hand-in portfolio with all projects done during the year. (Very good excuse to avoid the in-laws (outlaws really!! ;) ), sorry have to study... :D :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

I have known for a while that i really needed to do something about my weight but you know how it is, life sort of keeps you busy and so you have little time or inclination to do certain things, but there comes a time when we have to face reality

The funny thing is that before all this happened i had never weighed more than 7 and a half stone, i loved to work out and did long distance running and swimming, i am also a vegetarian so my diet is a healthy one on the whole, if you over look the crisps and chocolate :rotfl:

Now i am looking at a body that i do not recognise and finding that i just don't have the desire to excercise as i used to and i have also realised that leaving it much longer will mean that it becomes twice as hard to get under control.

I look at my son and he has problems just walking let alone excersing, yet he has to have physio daily at home and also three times a week at school. He hates P.E and in winter his joints hurt so bad he finds any movement painful yet he gets up everyday and just gets on with it, he never moans about the physio or having to do P.E and he never lets his problems get in the way of him just being a boy, that made me feel really bad for all the excuses i have used over the years,

So with that in mind and the great support fron here lets hope i can one day make him as proud of me as i am of him :D

My goal for tomorrow is to go out for a long walk, no matter what the weather and to eat small healthy regular meals ...............NO JUNK FOOD.

Actually that last part should be taken care of by the reduction to the weekly shopping budget :rotfl:

Welcome aboard and good luck! Your son sounds amazing and a great inspiration!

I may be out of turn, but have you thought about adding oily fish or fish oils to his diet? I hear they can ease joint pain. Just a thought...

    Thanks minniespender, he is.

I did try him on the fish oils not just for his joints but because he has special educational needs and i decided to give it a try when i heard about the research being done, but only after discussing it with his doctor. However he has very bad food sensitivites this makes giving him anything, even changing a brand, very difficult. We tried the tablets first but he reacted quickly to them, so we changed to liquids thinking it may have been the shell of the tablets but once again he reacted, after several months of trail and error we decided to just accept that for the moment that is not a route we can take.

However i have included some oily fish to his diet, only once a week at the moment because he's body is still adjusting but the reaction has not been too severe at the moment so fingers crossed we can keep that up and that it does do some good.
