    ipod shuffle 1gb brought march.
The bad : headphones . The stuff i purchase i can not burn as a mp3 cd disc . For some reason I have to burn as a cd audio thrn reimport then retag . This is with audio books so that might be an issue .
good: size ease of controls ,Itunes gift cards. least people know what to buy me for brithdays etc

ITunes are acutally M4U Files, which is basically an Apple style MP3.
I have heard that these are also protected, so they can only be played on Apple Ipods - and obviously with your Itunes Libary.

    Another apple fanboy checking in.
Have had a couple of Shuffles, 1st Gen Nano and now an iPhone. My son uses the Nano, it's scratched to hell but still going strong after 4 years.
    My wife has a shuffle.
We all share an iTunes library and 9 year old son and technophobe wife find it easy to download music, make playlists and update their ipods.

I have recently ditched the HiFi, bought some Aktimate speakers and have all music on iTunes now. The fact you can use the iphone/ipod touch as a remote is fantastic, as is the genius playlist function and general ease of use - i really cant understand why people find it difficult (though I already had a Mac with iTunes up and running before i got an ipod)
  • I hate Apple and ditest the cult of Apple fanboys. However, I own an 80gb iPod Classic (bought in summer 2007) and before that had a Creative Zen Xtra. It took a big leap of faith to cross over to 'the dark side' but since there was no viable alternative at the time in terms of cost, storage capacity and quality - i jumped across.

Turns out, its actually really good. I've used it nearly every day for 2 years. Battery life is alright still, storage size is perfect - it is functionally excellent. Combined with my Shure E110 it sounds pretty good. I've got a bunch of docks that it works great with. It sounds nice plugged in via the dock into my mini-Denon system.

I can't see a good reason to upgrade it. I want it purely to play music and video (when i'm commuting). No need for internet / touch screen and the price/capacity of the touch isn't good enough yet.

I don't mind iTunes - it sure beats the crappy software Creative bundled the Zen with. I know i can use other iPod clients (and have one loaded onto the disk drive partition of the iPod in case of emergency). All my music collection is mp3s - i won't let iTunes rip it for me. I buy my 'downloaded' music from play.com so I'm not limited in terms of DRM.

I don't own it to 'look cool' (infact, it stays most of its days in a rather ugly leather holder) - it suited what i needed out of a portable media device at the time and still handles the job 2 years later

They're m4a files, which are "Apple style" mp4 files.

They can't be burnt to an mp3 CD because they're not mp3s.

    Nope.

Music purchased from iTunes has no DRM. It hasn't for 2 years now.

ipod touch, brilliant, i love it and so does my son (he is 4!) plays all the games, which are very good quality.. Bought it from amazon uk 8gb, they seemed to be the cheapest the headphones are more than fine although i was a bit disapointed with the playback volume, my blackberry is actually louder which i think is a bit daft. brilliant though, its more than an mp3 player, i watch bbc iplayer on it in the garden !! 10/10

While iTunes+ was launched 2 years ago, that wasn't the entire catalogue going DRM free. That only happened in full this year.

OK I'm thinking of getting husband an iPod for his birthday, a friend has recommended the Classic. I currently get my music from Napster, which I love, is the iPod Classic compatible with Napster?

Yes, Napster can add purchased mp3s to iTunes.

I have a 32gb ipod touch with all my music on it over 6000 tunes along with my recent favourite pictures, I use it in the car, genius is well genius, now you can do up to 100 tunes great when the radio is naff. I can check my emails and browse the web and I think it's wonderful. I did buy some in ear noise canceling ear buds but I rarely use it with them as I have a variety of other devices to play through.
