What Model do you own? (eg. 2001 Classic)
When did you purchase it? (eg. June 2005)
How Long has it lasted? (eg. still working)

Was the price you paid worth it?

What are the good points and bad points?

The number of responses to this post so far, dictate how good the iPod actually is as a portable music player :)

Heh, in all seriousness, bad points:

    Rubish Software + Useability (iTunes)
    Battery Life deterioration
Quality of sound (Get some good headphones)
Legislation and problems around existing mp3 collection. (Legal/Illegalities)
re: good point 1 - mugability. More likely to get done on the street whilst you are walking around looking trendy.

    Good points:

It's an iPod so you look "cool".
    "Legit" Music Collection. (Debatable)

Honestly can't think of any other good points above rival mp3 players. Capacity is down to the model you choose.

If anyone else has any ideas or thoughts then write it down!

I have no idea why people blast iTunes, it is way better than anything else IMO (I use Macs and PCs daily, I ripped my entire (vast) collection way back when iTunes first appeared on OS 9, and the current version is fast and powerful, coverflow is excellent, finding a track in my huge 60GB library is virtually instant.)

We have a 1st gen Nano, use it for holidays and trips, holds a decent charge despite its age, works perfectly, in mint condition

We have a 1st Gen Shuffle, used regularly, a charge lasts a couple of weeks.

Finally we have a brand new Nano, my only issue with this is it's so thin and small, not so easy to hold without a case - but I'm nit picking, it's a beautiful item.

Good points: fantastic interface, all are beautiful made and crafted, lovely screens, good sound quality. iTunes easy to share/stream over the network, good software IMO. Everything is coherent and works together nicely.

Bad points: rubbish bundled ear-phones with the iPods. DRM with iTunes tracks before they dropped DRM, now a non-issue.

People blast iTunes because on a PC it's slow, when it updates it (by default) downloads Quicktime, Safari, bonjour and any other Mac software thats fit for Windows.

People who purchased music before the DRM drop are stuck with that DRM copy so they have to use iTunes to play that music and you can only play it on 5 computers.

The iPod is over rated IMO and will only work with iTunes.

Love my ipod, I have my entire collection of tunes on a 120Gb Classic bought 2 years ago, so easy to use, great interface, Genius function is a boon.
Also have a 32gb Touch and a nano for other purposes.

When I had an iPod I had no problems in managing the library on it through other applicatons than iTunes.

The iPod will not just "only work with iTunes", this is totally false. You can use it in disk mode to just copy songs to it directly, or use a variety of third party music managers such as MediaMonkey, Floola, Songbird, WinAmp, Yamipod etc. Removing the need for iTunes altogether if you really hate it that much.

You can pay extra to re-purchase the non-DRM track version of the DRM track if you purchased it before DRM was scrapped by Apple - I grant you this should be free, and a bit cheeky of Apple.

I've tried and used various players over the years, and would never use anything other than an iPod nowadays, my personal choice, but I certainly don't think they are just hype, they are very well received in comparative reviews in PC, Mac and gadget mags, and the press in general too.
  • I got one years ago, think it was like 2001. it wasn't one of those massive ones that came out first, it was the next model that was a reasonable size. It was great when I got it but compared to how they are now it looks like a piece of turd lol. Paid £250 for it I think.

The sound quailty was great when used through different earphones, the iPod phones were pants and extremely uncomfortable.

Didn't really like iTunes, I prefer one where I can just mount it as a drive on my laptop and drag music into a specified folder or folders and have it how I want it like I can do with my G1 phone. Also didn't like the fact that you couldn't copy music back from the iPod to computer. Although I did find some third party software that worked perfectly with the iPod and allowed this, it was a good replacement for iTunes.

It was very easy to use the iPod though. The scroll wheel allowed easy access to my music which was sorted into Artist/Album/Genre/Whatever I wanted it to be. However, I did have to make sure the tracks were labelled properly in itunes first if I wanted them to be like this.

True, ture - I should have know that because i've done it myself in the past with foobar2000.

I tend not to like Mixing apple with Windows now, becuase I have a Macbook and Mac Mini, but you do get the 'best' out of your iPod if you sync it with iTunes (updates ect) esp with the iPhone/iPod touch.

Bought my wife an Ipod touch at xmas and she loves it. IMO, as a piece of engineering nothing matches it. Its failings are all down to the limitations in its software / OS. Even the adverts had to be falsified to try and sell it! Itunes should be blacklisted - horrible software, much better 3rd party software out there.

I bought an Ipod nano about 4 years ago, I've since upgraded to a touch but my neice has my old nano and she loves it, it still works surprisingly she's a bit clumsy, anyway I love my ipod, I can use it in the car, at work I have a speaker and got one at home.
