Yeah, I've also read reviews that say putting green marker pen on your CDs makes them sound better, and they're as rigourously tested.

The most important aspect of the sound quality is the earphones, not the player.

I won't argue with that, and as you said yourself, the IPOD earphones are crap. The Sony feels a well built music player and very solid. The Creative Zen has the more plastic and light feel about it. But both(if you buy a decent music player above £60) always come with top headphones.

    Fair enough.

According to OS X's dictionary, grammar is "the whole system and structure of a language or of languages in general, usually taken as consisting of syntax and morphology (including inflections) and sometimes also phonology and semantics", and semantics is "the branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning."

So I guess semantics is part of the grammar of a language, but then again, so is every other aspect of the language, so semantics is more precise when talking about the meaning of words.

It's not in OS X's dictionary, so that phrase doesn't exist I'm afraid. ;)

It does redirect me to a Wikipedia article called "Linguistic prescription" though.

Ok, here is a quick definition. You won't get it on dictionary.com.

A Grammar Nazi is someone who picks apart the smallest detail in forum posts with the intention of belittling the original poster. In this case, I was spot on in my definition of the word consensus yet you felt the need to come in and incorrectly correct me on its definition. Then argue with me about the points I made.

Regardless if we are arguing "semantics or grammar" (because they are effectivley the same thing) - you were trying to flag me on an incorrect use of a word as you understood it. This is known as being a Grammar Nazi. Hence the expression used.

I also feel dirty that you tried to school me on a word incorrectly and the definition was taken from OS X's dictionary! Eeeuggh!!!
  • Wow this is turning into a religious argument!

Put me down for another iPod fan, particularly for the less technical. The combination of iTunes and iPod allows even for old age pensioners to rip their cd's, create playlists and take their music with them. There is also the huge range of accessories which makes things easier.

If you want absolutely the most capacity for the least money regardless of fiddly menus, software etc, then buy something else.

I'm sure both the Zen and the Sony are very good, but that doesn't mean iPods aren't. It's a big world, with plenty of room for different mp3 players.

I was pointing out that the consensus was not that iPods were "meh". The consensus was positive (and it still is). I don't know how you could know the meaning of the word and argue otherwise.

It uses the New Oxford American Dictionary, the Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus, and Wikipedia if that makes you feel any better.

RE: sound quality - I have seen data from my job in market research and can report that sound quality isn't top of the list of why most people chose the MP3 player they have.

The main reasons actually centre on the brand and associations of quality (yes, most of the sample owned iPods but this reflects the market). So those companies using a sound quality argument as a basis for selling MP3 players are largely missing what the majority of people want. You might say that's the sheep mentality from iPod's ubiquity in the market, or a reflection of how people no longer care about quality in a time of compressed audio formats...but that's the reality of portable audio nowadays.

For what it's worth, other factors along with brand that are more important than sound quality are affordability, portability, appearance/design, and ease of use.

I see we have a IPOD fanboy:rotfl: So many around. It was based on my opinion. And the hundreds of reviews from people who have bought this junk.

At least Marty can provide an erudite and intelligent comment, rather than resorting to nonsense such as "fanboy" comments.

To dismiss an iPod as junk suggests you have the design flair and intelligence to build a better device...

Personally I'd rather read informed reviews and discussions from technical experts, reviewers who test sound quality, ability, build quality etc. You may enjoy dismissing all these reviews and people as "fanboys" - an 80s term which I despise, but many of us enjoy their informed and intelligent opinion.

As I said each to their own...

Apple have sold millions of the devices, and I've yet to meet an unhappy colleague with one, most people I know own them, and everyone enjoys them.
