Tia- Thanks for the advice, i'm sure that SCBU isn't as bad as i thought i think it was just the shock of seeing it there in my notes, I'm sure it'll be fine! It must be good to know you have a date that your little girl is coming, chances are our little one will be around the same date, because i don't think they'll let me go past 36/37 weeks, so it looks like he's coming around my birthday!
Heen81- congrats on becoming viable, it's a lovely feeling and now each week you know that your bub is even more ready!
For those who have had one, can someone explain what a c-section is like, until Sunday i'd never been in a hospital let alone be going in for an operation, and i just want to know if they will give me my baby to hold straight away.
I'm also on Iron now because of the risk of further bleeds but its making me a little "bunged up" any tips on how I can keep things moving? It worries me because I'm scared to push too hard for a poo in case i styart bleeding again
Squishy - baby will be fine, the amniotic fluid it there for a reason, it's all cushioning for baby and baby would have just sloshed and squidged out of the way as you got through the gap and is happy as larry in there
Carla & NMS - I quite fancy 07/08/09 as well seeing as that'll be when i'm 37 weeks and likely to be booked in for my c-section, and it'll be 2 days before my birthday.
I have cookies.....I think i may slope off the the kitchen and get a cup of tea to go with them!
Labour vibes where needed, lots of hugs to go round and for all the people i've missed *hello!*0 -

Assuming you are planning on being awake rather than under GA, they will shave about an inch of hair from the top of your pubic area, dress you in a gown and some surgical stockings and walk you down to theatre. There the anaethetist will put the epidural in. This is uncomfortable but not painful as such. They will check you very carefully over the next half and hour or so to make sure the epidural is working properly. This involves tickling your feet mainly and once they are numb moving up the body to make sure you are numb right up to tummy level. You'll be able to move your top half normally.
When you are nicely numbed up, they will put a catheter in to drain off urine. That will stay in for about 12 hours or so, as you won't be able to get up to pee until the epidural has completely worn off. You will feel this, but again its not painful. It felt to me a bit like someone trying to stick a plug in a socket but not aligning the pins carefully! You shouldn't feel the incision itself, but you will probably feel the surgeon rummaging in your tummy to get the baby out. Again not painful but odd - imagine someone jiggling your boobs vigorously, that kind of sensation. They will lower the screen a little to let you see the baby being lifted out of your tummy, then will check baby quickly (takes less than a minute) then if all is well, give him to you straightaway for a cuddle while the surgeon finishes off.
I didn't ask whether I was allowed to bf during this time, but we were given an opportunity to bf whilst in recovery which was only about 20mins after baby was born.
You can expect to be completely numb for about 6 hours after the section and after this the feeling will come back slowly to your legs. They will give you pain relief afterwards, and my experience is that its best to take it when offered even if you think you are OK, as if you let the pain relief run down, it takes a while to get back on top of it. After my elective though I was up and about and completely pain free even without meds after 3 days, though obviously needed to be careful about lifting and stretching. Stitches came out on 5th day.
hope this helps0 -
Nicki, thankyou so much, that's really reassuring, i just wanted to be able to bring baby straight to me and hopefully straight to the breast, obviously that's only if everything is ok with him. You've made it sound a lot less traumatic than the scene that was playing in my head, which i REALLY appreciate!
I dont know if you know but i've also heard people mention a spinal block, does anyone know the benefits or downsides of those?0 -
Carla - 36 wks here too - and have been having that same pressure (and swelling) of that region for the last week or two. It started about the time the baby dropped some. Midwife said it's the pressure of the head pushing down, but not ready to come out yet. Oh, and as for the pineapple, I've heard the core (middle) part is the part that is supposed to be helpful. Not a clue if it's true, but I'm certainly enjoying the fresh pineapple anyway - DH brought home 2 lovely sweet ones! yummmmmmMSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0
