karen - what has usually worked for us was expressing one feed per day and letting DH give the baby that feed so I can take a nap. We generally start that after a few weeks, once breastfeeding has gotten better established though. I liked doing this as it means I get that little time to sleep and DH gets extra time with the baby. Everyone is different though - you'll just have to see what works best for you.

Also will I do much expressing. I was going to get a manual pump just in case but if I do that will I need the sterilisers/ bottles etc. why would I be expressing - would it be because I was too lazy and wanted DH to feed baby instead?

Only you can know how much expressing you will do :D but possible reasons (apart from wanting the odd night feed off) would be:

    1. if you needed to go out without baby for a few hours. eg to have a hair cut, doctor's appointment;

    2. if you wanted/needed to take something, you'd rather not pass on to baby through your milk - eg painkillers for a headache, a few glasses of wine. You could feed baby before you took it, then express an hour or so later to get rid of the worst of it, throw the milk away, and feed as normal next time baby wanted it.

    3. to build up an emergency store in case you need to be separated from baby for a longer than a couple of hours - particularly important if you have other kids. If you needed for example to take an older kid to A and E, you could leave baby with a friend with some frozen milk without having to stress out.

    4. to build up milk supplies if you are a bit low - the more you stimulate, the more you produce, so feeding plus a small amount of expressing will increase the amount you produce.

    5. to relieve engorgement if your baby hasn't fed for longer than usual. Just freeze any you get, and you have started the emergency store for no 3!

If you are going to express, then yes you need both steriliser and bottles.

I don't think any position would make you more likely to get pregnant, same as standing on your head afterwards wouldn't help any as far as i know! :D

    Sorry Tia!

Its definitely not going to be cheesecake - I don't like it.

I like the fact that people who have given birth come back on because you have the experience and knowledge of having just gone though birth and will know what you are actually making use of now. Please don't go!

Thanks Nicki - this is my first so its all strange to me. That is so comprehensive I am going to print it out so I remember later on because pregnancy brain can come on at any point and it will all be forgotten.....:rotfl:

I also read somewhere that for newborns any expressed milk should be fed to them using a teaspoon because they could get confused using a teat. Anything in this or do you just make sure you have the right teat size? I love talking teats :D

    hi

Does anyone know the best sexual position when trying to get pregnant?

You should ask on the TTC thread. I think best thing is making sure the woman has an orgasm at the same time or soon after :)

This may be a silly question, but as I am intending to breast feed (fingers crossed as it will be cheaper) should I bother to get any sterilisers/bottles etc. or should I just leave it and if I need to bottle feed worry about it then?

Sorry for my stupidity - hopefully by the time bump arrives I will have some idea what is going on :D

I haven;t bothered getting anything like bottles as I also plan to BF and reckon that by the time I want to leave baby to go out I will have had time to get what I need.

Doesn;t matter, but it can help if you put your hips in the air like Tia said, afterwards, and have an orgasm after the man does, to help draw the sperm in. They swim upwards though so I wouldn't worry too much.

I am taking ds to the docs in a bit to put my mind at rest if he has chicken pox or not i will feel dead silly if he doesn't as i took him a while ago thinking he had it but pre-school told me they thought he had it and to take him so i did doc was not impressed as i had took up a side room for nothing!

I think he does now though, I have a really big family do next week where there will be tons of kids i really want to go as it is my grans 80th birthday but if he has it we won't be able to.

Does anyone else have rubbish contact times for there MW I don't have her own number it goes to a call center and it is only manned for 1 hr between 9am-10am so it was too late to ring her for advice. I think it is a bit bad really.

They say that but there are thousands of babies who would disagree.

The first 6 weeks it is important to breast feed only to avoid nipple confusion... but again some babies are fine switching from breast to bottle and even *shock horror* dummies.

Don't pay much attention to things you read, most of it is just damn confusing, you go with your instinct, a Mum knows best.

Awesome, BH have started up again
