The exchanges are enabled today - ISP's (if they choose), can start submitting orders to BTw for their customers' ADSL services to be regraded from the standard IPstream products to MaxDSL - I've read that ISP's are currently restricted to 700 orders per day.

Some ISP's, such as PlusNet, have already made clear that the regrading process could take several months.

New ADSL orders, can all go through as MaxDSL services (presuming the ISP is offering MaxDSL in its product line).

If anyone's interested in the estimated speeds, and whether BT have your exchange enabled for MaxDSL yet, then use the BTw ADSL Availability Checker in this post

Mine regrade is due to go through on Monday - I'm with IDNet.net, ordered it yesterday as soon as it was announced.

I'm with Plusnet currently but looking to flee after they've implemented what is basically a 5 gig cap. If I switch to another ISP, would that qualify as a 'new' account, and would I thus be able to get 8Mb?

Just used the BT checker and it told me my max speed would be 5MB onnection... I am with UKOnline and I am on 12MB just now.......?
  • How can I find out when my exchange is going to be upgraded? I'm still stuck on 2MBs.
Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps. Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 6.5Mbps up to 8Mbps. The actual ADSL Max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible will be set. If you decide to place an order, a further test will be performed to confirm if your line is suitable for the service you wish to purchase. Thank you for your interest.

I'm realllly close to the exchange, by the way.

EDIT: Looks like it was enabled for MaxADSL on the 31st March! Anyone know of a good ISP I can swap to now, as I've been waiting to switch from Fast24 for ages. Obviously, I'd prefer no cap, but if there must be a cap, it's got to be very high (found one with a 100GB per month cap for the same price I'm paying for my 2MB line now, but they want £47 to set up).

Good News, BT have finished enabling this exchange for Max DSL products.
Products will be available from 31/03/06.
Speeds: Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 6.5Mbps up to 8Mbps.
BT are in the process of upgrading the majority of telephone exchanges around the UK to support speeds of up to 8Mbit/s.

The status given here is an estimate given by BT on 31/03/06

Many of the exchanges are red and amber at the moment due to the fact that until the main roll out is well commenced BT will not finalise the dates as they want to ensure that any unforseen issues will not affect dates. We will publish the updated info when and as we get it. The roll out is still fully commited too, as previously commented upon, and the info will be with you as soon as possible.

Please note: This checker is not a generic fault tracker. Updates are made as often and as quickly as information becomes available. We display only the information available in the public domain and can't account for it's accurancy.

  • I want to sign up to UKonline but apparently they are oversubscribed in my area. Does the exchange upgrade mean they will be able to expand the number of subscribers?

For exisitng BT Broadband customers, BT will be rolling out the Max sevice in phase's.
They will start by accepting order from the 4th April, this will initally be limited to customers on the BT Broadband option 4, then it will be made avilable to option 3 customers, then option 2 and 1.

I shall confirm the exact dates on monday, when I return to work

    cheers

That's because BTw are only providing ADSL1 connections (which only supports up to 8Mbps).

UKonline use, what is known as Shared LLU, which means they have their own equipment installed in the BT exchange - UKonline's equipment is ADSL2+ (which supports up to 24Mbps).

No possibly not, if you mean their 22Mbps product it is down to UKonline to install extra equipment in the exchange as UKonline are an LLU provider. If its the 2-8Mbps product, then its probably for BTw to install extra capacity.
