Cars with a disabled tax disc

Hi I recently got a new car on the mobilty scheme and when they sent my tax disc it had disabled written on it.

Number 1- I know I am disabled but does it have to be written on the tax disc for everyone to see aswell, I Know its not a big deal but I would prefer it not to be written on it.

Number 2 - Can I change and if I do will I get into trouble with the police

Please help!!!!

We never been asked once in just over a year. I can understand why you would want too, I assume you got a blue badge, we get more problems with that with disgruntled looks from elderly people just because my daughter who is 18 is disabled and come with us, some I think, I get the impression they think the blue badge is just for elderly people

Presumably you use a blue badge anyway? So that shows that you're disabled too.
You don't pay for the tax because your disabled and so it's written on there, if it saves you money then I don't really get that it's a problem? It's not a label on you, just your tax disc.

When did you last stop and read someone else's tax disc? Why would you? We've had ours several years and no-one's ever mentioned it, I doubt if anyone's even seen it.

You will just have to put up with it, I'm afraid. I also 'look like any other person' ( as do many, many disabled people!!) but I have a have a tax disc saying 'disabled' on it as it is for my son. No one has ever mentioned the tax disc in the 6 years we have been tax exempt.

However, people have questioned my sons blue badge as for some bizarre reason they seem to assume it is one of us who should be disabled rather than my obviously disabled child sitting in a wheelchair, maybe it is this they are commenting on?

EDIT - Bargaingalore - it is always the elderly that have questioned me! One elderly man in particular was very angry with me once, yelling that his disabled wife had much more right over a disabled parking space that we were parked in, as she was walking yet my son was in a wheelchair!

I think you are being a bit precious, I'm afraid. point number one, there is nothing to be ashamed about because you are disabled. Whilst it isn't necessarily a badge to wear with pride, I don't see why it such a secret.

point number 2, yes you can change it. Don't have a motability car, buy one thru the more usual route (doing without the financial benefits that motability confirs), and tax it yourself.

Thru the motability scheme, and the governments agreement to waive road tax for vehicles used by disabled people, you actually get an advantage. God knows we get few enough.

I have driven cars with 'disabled' tax discs for the last 20 years. I've parked THOUSANDS of times in car parks & city centres. No one has ever commented on my tax disc, EVER.

    Get over yourself.

hi i totally understand i feel the same way if i could afford it i would pay the blooming tax as i feel people judge you if they can't see the disability ...i hate it saying :confused:disabled why should we be made to stand out like lepers..

The point is, it doesn't make you stand out like a "leper", would you rather have it say disabled, which is very very unlikely to be noticed, or not be able to drive and get anywhere because you have to pay for it and can't afford it?!

I've no idea if you use a wheelchair or not, but that gets you FAR more staring and questions than one word on a tax disc, it's also like having a giant DISABLED label stuck on you as far as most people are concerned. They don't see your tax disc and talk to the person with you instead of you!

Ha - you think people judge you if they can't see the disability. Try it from where I stand (wonkily), believe me they judge those of us with visible disabilities more.

Well your tax disc must be very different to mine then. On mine, the word 'disabled' is in tiny black letters. I assume on yours it's in 6 inch high text, printed in bright orange ??

Oh, and by the way, leperosy is an illness which people catch thru no fault of their own. Your comment 'stand out like lepers' is pretty offensive you know.

No seriously, I don't think ANYONE reads tax discs, unless they are checking it when writing out a parking ticket or stopping you for speeding. Chill guys.
