  • My trip yesterday. Supermarket, spotty moldoon was chatting to her mate on the otehr till and had all the charisma of fart in a lift.

At the DIY store, nice girl called me over, served me with a smile and wished me well. Shame I'm married

I take it your post is meant to be ironic.

    Edited to add.

I posted a reply to post #219 below but I have since deleted it as the thread is going off topic with the spelling issues and I don't wish to contribute to that any longer. Cheers. Takoda.

I have learned many interesting and pertinent things from this thread and some rather amusing things too, so many thanks everyone. I have also learned that this Takoda numpty gives every appearance of being a smug and objectionable a**e so now s/he's blocked, blocked, blocked.

I haven't worked in retail since my schooldays before the flood but I remember well how difficult it is to satisfy the tiny minority of people who are absolutely intent on not being satisfied and anyone dealing with them on a daily basis, whatever age they might be, deserves a flipping medal in my opinion. Most might not thank you in person but you are appreciated by most of us, I am sure

I remember once buying a copy of Loaded or FHM (can't remember which one) from Asda. I was buying it for work as one of our financial guys gave a mini-interview in an article. The old biddy serving me looked at me a few times with her perv-dar and told me that I would go blind buying "this sort of muck." :D

That is so funny- the staff in my local Asda aren't comedians!!

I haven't worked in retail for 16 years. None of my observations (save being mistaken for staff of another store) are from way back then

Yes it may be childish but it is true and it has worked since the thread is now back to discussing customers. :D
  • Just my two pence worth...

I'm a student, and I've been working in retail for almost 6 years. I didn't notice this so much in my previous job, but in my current role I sometimes get teased by other staff members for being "too nice" to customers. Apparently, according to some of my (younger) co-workers, I don't need to:
    • greet a customer with: "Hi, apologies for your wait" if they've been standing in a long queue
    • ask them how they are/if they have any plans for the day/evening/if they're going on holiday/comment on the weather, and enter into a conversation about it
    • when a customer has an enquiry that I can't answer, actually phone the relevant department in-store, instead of standing for a minute nattering into a dead handset and feeding the customer some rubbish at the end of it
    • at the end of a transaction, thank them for their patience (I handle returns and exchanges, so our transactions are a bit more complex and hence take a bit more time)
Thta's not to say that all of my colleagues have this attitude problem - some of them are fantastic, and customers have complemented them both to their face and to our management.

Sometimes a smile and some manners is all it takes.

Saying that, I'm pretty sure anyone who has ever worked in retail has some stories to tell about customers and the treatment we've had to experience...

Some people think it is their birthright to insult and be rude to others.I bet if you are rude to them they will be the ones who shout the loudest. If you can;t take it,don't dish it out !
