Isn't that a bit like inverted snobbery? Grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side you know.

Sadly my "nice office job" doesn't often permit me to work set hours and finish on time or get paid overtime or get staff discount...

The days of paid overtime and leaving anywhere near on time are sadly a distant memory for most retail workers. (Not just down to recent events either, this was happening long before the downturn)

Sundays are paid at normal rate in most places and we don't leave when the shops close. We are understaffed and so constantly get called on our days off to cover when people call in sick. The staff discount is only good if you happen to need the product you sell! :D

I think everyone in more or less every profession is having a bad time atm

but for all my moans about my job, I think a desk job would drive me nuts! Not to mention how much weight I would put on! :rotfl:

What I'm bored with is having to make the same points over and over again to the same people who are deliberately being obtuse.

I didn't say I was bored with the thread just with arguing about the reasons staff have problems with customers.

I still think you mean "bored with" rather than "bored of". You are obviously inexperienced with regards to grammar as well.:rotfl:

I apologise if you feel I meant it that way, just from what i've been informed about office jobs from my friends that are in them, they're a lot less of a rollercoaster than retail can be, but still have targets like retail. Also (depending on the company and position), not spending hours on extra work that is unpaid.

As for staff discount, in the area I work in, there isn't any. We have a perk of the job, and additionals most companies offer (pension, childcare, health insurance etc etc.)

I've noticed recently that supermarket staff are suddenly incredibly friendly. I wondered at first if it was just an isolated store, but I've seen it in different shops, all in the same area of London - not just 'normal' politeness - i.e. the amount I would expect in any customer-type situation, but REALLY nice. I'd like to think it's because I have nice hair, or something, but I think there must be some new training programme doing the rounds!

It's really cheering, cos I'm the first to complain if I get poor service, and I complain more vociferously than the worst of the customers I used to serve...:D;)

I do agree with the OP that customers can treat staff in a shockingly rude manner, but then I've had some blisteringly rude service in my time too. My favourite one recently was a Customer Service 'advisor' yelling at me down the phone: "Don't interrupt me!" Yep, you guessed it - he yelled it whilst I was talking....

Let's all smile more. I reckon it'll change the world. xx:p

I worked for four years in an office and I hated it. It was boring, there were ridiculous office politics, the managers had targets in their annual reviews that meant that they HAD to discipline a certain amount of people, whether there was reason to or not and there were no discernible perks.

The only good side, I suppose, was the flexible working scheme.

On the other hand, I love my job, now. Yes, I get some horrible customers, but they're usually odd enough to make an amusing story. I'm genuinely interested in the products and walking around all day keeps me fit.

The pay isn't as high, but bonuses and staff discount have more than made up for it. I got a new PC for £25 and a Playstation 3 for £20, so that's good in itself :D

No it is still unfortunately just a place for retail staff to whine about their customers

    I work in retail...

I work on Saturdays 8am-6pm, every Saturday. I am a student. I need the money.

I agree that the majority of people are lovely and you can have a good joke with them. There is the minority however (my personal experience shows that it is mainly senior citizens as they seem to look down upon all of us "younger ones") who are just plain rude, ignorant and annoying! Mostly senior citizens, the "chavs" are actually quite nice talking wise, until you relise their friends are stealing alcohol... but still, they are not rude!

Is annoying to think that moaning at me with change company policy or make items magically appear on the shelf, I do like my job, not having a rant, but agree that the minority of people do need to look at what they say when they are being rude, we are not trying to flog you un-neccesary items, we are trying to do our job, get paid and live our lives, just like anybody else.
