    Hmmm.... who's being abusive?

Hilarious. Doesn't take a lot of hard work to become a teacher. But that's reflected in the salary.

    I hope you're kidding.

Signing on every 2 weeks having lost a job (any job) to be treated like dirt for NO LONGER having a job.

It may be a crappy job with low pay, but if that is what they have signed up to do, it is what they are expected to do.;)
I too am unemployed , but worked in retail for 20 years..
Whatever their job Nobody should be physically or verbally abused, it is an infringment of their basic Human Rights.....:D

No one signs up to put up with ignorant crap from morons, perhaps if managers and directors grew some cojones and banned some of the idiots I hear when I am shopping from their premises at least for a short while (like some pubs and clubs do) people would have some motivation to behave and communicate in a civilised manner.

Nope sorry I don't agree. It matters a great deal the way the till assistant or whoever deals with the situation. Letting people have their say/then being sympathetic/then doing whatever you can to sort out their problem goes a long way to diffusing situations.

People get angrier because the poorly trained till person does not seem to care or shrugs or replies in an angry or upset way back. You have to look at WHY the person is so angry. Yes, a small percentage have mental heath issues (hooray for care in the community) but the vast majority or just poor saps who feel they have had a raw deal. So they complain and then the person doesn't seem to care so the situation escalates.

Physical abuse should be reported to the Police as an assault. Verbal abuse is unfortunately part of the job especially if you work for a company that deals with complaints poorly.

The thread title is "Don't take it out on the till monkey" or something like that. I'm just pointing out that shop assistants are not the only people who face verbal/physical abuse in their jobs.

Staff today do not have good enough interpersonal skills. Add that to society getting more impatient and more angry and the result is explosive.

Like I say - deal with it or get a different job.

Not ALL situations will escalate. But a lot will if the staff do not deal with them EFFECTIVELY.

Sorry you failed to convince me I'm wrong. It is probably your age and lack of experience.

You are WRONG WRONG WRONG....A lot of people are cowards and know that the assisstant can't hit back ...You're comments seem naive considering that YOU question other people's experience.....I have 20 years in retail ..I have been spat at ., threatened with weapons, threats to my Family etc.. If I knocked on youre door and behaved like that .. what would you do? just accept it?:T

Golly, which jobs are those where you don't have to deal with people? I looked for years and couldn't find one. Unfortunately the mortuary business wasn't hiring (and you still have to deal with live people, i.e. mourners).

  • been in retail goin on 5 and a half years now and there's so many stories i could tell... but the best one i have heard was the day a cust came in and was seriousoly kicking off about an issue they had and almost had my co worker in tears. Deputy manager goes over diffuses the situation (to degree) and ask the customer to leave the store and whne they out the building tells the customer to f**k off and if they treat his staff like that again he'll call the cops on them. The customer shocked beyond all reason starts screaming i'll report you for that..to which my manager calmly said "prove it" as he had taken them outside and there were no cameras or witnesses to the event

  • Lol, don't you love junkies?

Dunno if I've posted this before, but my mum works in an electrical department of a supermarket, and a man came up and bought an ipod. Mum put it all through the till, checked everything was there and gave it to the man. He then asked the golden question: How do you get music on it? Mum then explained about itunes and importing CDs and so on, and there was a pause before the man says "Oh, you need a computer? I don't have one of those!" He honestly thought that you could record things off the radio onto it.

I always find that if I have a problem with something, politeness is always the best course of action.

I usually start off the conversation by saying in a jokey voice "I'm having one of those days"

followed by me saying "I know it's not your fault personally"

I keep the conversation jolly even if I'm presented with someone with little experience, I ask them to get the supervisor and when the supervisor comes, I'm polite about the previous assistant.

Which is probably why I've always managed to get my problems resolved.
