In an economy/climate where jobs are drying up, leaving the job one has and getting another one would pretty much be suicide.

For one thing, if you stay in the job and try to find a new one (as I did with a job I absolutely dispised) it could take months or even years.

Yeah fair enough but they need to quit whinging and wining about it!

Everyone has a choice. People can retrain, take qualifications at night school, make some bl**dy effort and get themselves a job they do enjoy.

Or they could make a little bit more effort to do the job they DO have in a more effective way ;)

I work part time in a shop to sub my student loan.

Personally I dont think anyone should be abused in their line of work, no matter what it is. And I must say, that no matter how polite you are, no matter how many times you apologise for something that's gone wrong, and how much you try to put the problem right some people are hell bent on taking their annoyance out on someone.

No one should be shouted at at work.If you have a problem, then there are avenues for making a complaint. And saying that staff are somehow responsible is the same as saying that a woman deserves to be raped because she dressed provocatively.Such attitudes have no place in the 21st century.

Well not from my store anyway! We get it all the time - I had another bloke the other day buying fags. Ask him for ID - he says he's 20 but doesn't have any. I say sorry but no. He then points at his car - I work in a service station - and informs me he's driving the chavmobile. I remind him he only has to be 17 to drive (that's if he has a license). And then he declares 'you have to be 18 to drive a 2litre'. I wish someone informed me of all these laws

Haha I had the same thing when I worked in Sainsburys, chavvy lad who looked about 16 trying to buy alcohol. When I asked for ID he said he didn't have any but 'ere look, I'm old enough to drive so why should I put up with this crap and having to carry ID around with me, when that's my car in the car park... *pointing in some random direction*' He shut up fairly quickly when I pointed out that a) you can drive at 17 when you need to be 18 to buy alcohol and b) to drive you need to have your drivers licences on you so you should be able to show me it as ID for your booze?

Haha, just remembered another one, again some chavvy lass starts shouting at me when I refused to serve her as she had no ID and looked about 15. Got the supervisor over who managed to get rid of her. About 20 minutes later the customer service desk got a phone call off the girl's mam who started having a go at them and saying 'look, how dare you accuse my daughter of lying, I can confirm that she is over 18 and your behaviour is disgusting blah blah blah' I wish the guy on the desk had said 'ok, well parental consent is now a legal form of ID so send her back round and we'll give her all the alcohol she wants...' That's what I would have done!

"Bored of" me? I THINK you mean "Bored WITH" me.
Why should I give it a rest? I'm as entitled to post my opinion as anyone else. More so in fact since the range of jobs I have had gives me an overall view that someone who went from school into retail and then stayed there for years cannot possibly have!
    QUOTE]
I THINK the OP meant "bored of your sh*t". You seem to have an attitude as if to say that you are better than everyone who works in retail.

Everyone is entitled to whinge and whine about aspects of their job as much as you are entitled to your opnions. Especially as this is the VENT section of the forums. People may whinge and moan about things at work but it doesn't mean that they don't enjoy their jobs.

You know, I used to get irritated by those notices treating giving verbal abuse of train guards the same as giving them a black eye. I've been taught that I was wrong, and not by the people arguing with the OP either.

There are two issues here, dissatisfaction and irritation due to the actions or policies of the company, and disatisfaction that stems from the behaviour or inadiquacies of the individual assistant. The OP was talking about the former, I feel, and expecting people not to take something out on someone that wasn't their fault is reasonable IMO.

I read in this section rants from many people about bad service where the ranter has a poor understanding of how things should work, or has made bad assumptions. Should shop assistants expect to deal with rants from these people?

Remeber you don't have to blow your top and get agressive in order to get your point across. I think it's reasonable to express disatisfation, so long as its without shouting, swearing, anger or agressive sarcasm.

If you can't express your dissatisfaction reasonably, then any censorship that results from you saying nothing to avoid blowing up is down to your own lack of self control, not society.
