    Hi in*the*red,

We have a quite recent thread on ants, so I've merged your thread into it as it helps Old Style readers to find all the ideas in one place. As always, posts are listed in date order so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

Some ants "appeared" on the living room window sill a few weeks ago and being something of a wimp I put some golden syrup into a large yoghurt pot and left it on it's side on the sill for a few hours.

Most of the ants had gone into the pot and got stuck in the syrup. I then chucked the pot out (ants included). I did this twice and it got rid of most of them. The remaining ones were "dispatched" the old fashioned way!

We have a problem every year with ants coming into the house, I use nippon and ant powder, we bought the little ant houses, you punch holes in the sides, put the liquid in the centre pop the lid on and leave it where the ants run......... we used to just put it down on margarines lids and there were hundreds used to swarm round it, usually had to treat them twice before they got the message.

This year, we were just about to go away when I found them under the rug in the living room, I put Nippon down and we sprinkled ant powder where we could see them coming from under the edging on the laminate floor, we also went outside and put the any powder along the edge where they were running.

When we got back a week later there were hundreds of dead ants on the floor, so I hoovered up the lot and emptied the dyson into the dustbin. Have not seen any since.

    I hate the damn things!!!!!!!

ants seem to be taking over our house at the moment but we cant put pwder down because of the cats...any ideas?
  • We had an invasion of the horrid little black things two weeks ago. My son went to get some treacle from the cupboard and found the tin covered in them (he let out such a shriek  ). They were in the cupboard and on the worktops. I was beside myself as i've never had them in the house before and I'd heard they were particularly hard to get rid of once indoors. Anyway, I spent a strange evening following their discovery - reading all I could on the internet about ways to deal with them and then studying them to find out where they were coming from (not as easy as it seems). I didn't want to use anything chemical as I have pets and small children around and also 'cos I'm a 'greenie' and avoid chemicals where possible. In the end I used a mixture of talcum powder, chilli powder and salt sprinkled around any of their possible entrances/exits and it seems to have worked! Apart from a couple of strays the next day - and I think these were ones that hadn't been able to find their way out from the day before - no more ants. I'm hugely relieved!

If you can find the nest, pour boiling water into it every day for about a week.
Should sort them out (at least it did for me)
