Bronnie - you make some really good points especially about searching for one item at time

Melgirl - well done, I bet you fee much better

Crafty - 63 and a size "11", what is your secret? I agree with Bronnie about looking through magazine etc to get a feel for what look you are trying to achieve.

    Thanks eyeonspain,

I will feel much better when next weekend is over and I am on my way to either the post office to post everything that has sold or to the charity shop to donate everything that didn't sell.

I only made the decision to create a capsule wardrobe on Wednesday, tried everything on on Thursday to make sure the capsule fits me/fits well together and started making piles of everything unwanted yesterday. So it is very early days and everything is very unorganised at the moment!

Very good metabolism plus being rather 'nervy' for most of my life (so went off food when I got stressed) and a small appetite. Net result I spent most of my life being underweight.

For some reason I have got less stressed in recent years and my appetite has improved so I put on some weight. I now have a normal BMI.
  • Melgirl, speaking from experience, order will come out of the chaos, you just need to keep on with it. What i did was make a capsule of what i already had, then slowly either replaced or added to it. I see my capsule as work in motion, it's not set in stone, and it will evolve over time. I plan never to go back to how i was a few years ago, it was really depressing, wardrobe full to bursting with nothing matching or fitting. Keep posting, these clothes threads are really helpful and inspiring and lots of really helpful people on here, with plenty of advice.

Have been to a carboot sale today, to get rid of some of my cleared out clothes. The weather wasnt too good, drizzle, rain, drizzle, some sun then heavy rain! sold a few books, all my handbags, some bric a brac and a dress. However rather than taking all the stuff home and end up storing it all, I have sorted it out into bags for charity, so one day next week I will get rid of it all. I used to sell quite a lot on e bay, but found it too much hassle. So if it goes to a good cause and clears out my wardrobe then thats good enough for me.

    Hi,

I have finally sorted my wardrobe with DH's help (he has specifically asked me to mention this ). There are 2 bin bags full that would go to Charity Shop.

Basically I tried each and every thing in my wardrobe and showed it to him. Whatever, we didn't find flattering/ didn't fit is gone. Whatever was left, I have made sets and have then hung them together.
I have stored all the winter clothes in a vacuum bag under the bed

Basically this is what I am left with for this summer

34 Sets for work (We don't have a dress code at work so I can wear Trousers/ Skirts/ Jeans - basically everything)
    3 Dresses
    18 pair of Shoes
    10 summer jackets/ MACs
8 vests/ Ts which can basically go with any jeans/ leggings
    4 Handbags
    5 sets of PJs

Now I know they seem a lot. But all lowers have a coordinating top and I didn't want to throw them as they all fit well.

There are 5 tops that would just last this season so I am going to chuck them out in 3-4 months time

Only issue is that I am not left with any going out top as most of them were bought in a rush so I may have to invest in a couple this season

Other than that I don't have to spend any money on clothes this season.

Thanks to this thread, this exercise is going to save me so much time in the morning :j:j:j:j

Take care everyone and do keep posting

    Hi All

:TSome great wardrobe work has obviously been going on!!
    Very theraputic isn't it?

Pavlov's Dog.. Glad you're joining in. Let us know how you get on, you've got a good incentive with moving, fresh start etc!!

Crafty scholar......you know how shop sizes vary. You just need to find one that makes a generous size 10 or a mean size 12 to accomodate your size 11 bod :D

x factor, you need to start the process in reverse to the rest of us ...choosing what to put in your wardrobe not take out:rotfl:

katie .....glad you got rid of some stuff at the car boot...the charity shop will be grateful anyway. How is your wardrobe looking now? Do you have any gaps after your clearout??

...well done on your amazing clearout. Just wondering what special tricks you had to keep DH's interest through 34+ costume changes;)
Glad the thread has inspired you and thanks for posting your list ...to inspire others!

I have a few wardrobe things to buy, ready for hols this week and have got a little book I keep jotting odds and sods down as I think of them, so I know what to look for when I go shopping. I am quite happy to spend a bit now, knowing they are going to be planned and useful purchases.

    Bye for now!

Well I now have all holiday clothes folded away in plastic storage boxes (there are some things I would wear on holiday I wouldnt feel comfortable wearing at home). All winter clothes have been moved to wardrobe in spare room. All the clothes I have left in my wardrobe fit ok, 2 or 3 tops I will wear over summer and then bin. Its hard to get rid of "good clothes", but I have been ruthless.

A couple of things I need,( since I have decided to stick with my jeans, shirt/t shirt combo, which does work pretty well for me) a leather plaited belt to replace my current one, which is unravelling & cant be fixed, and a smartish summer jacket. I could do with a shower proof type (NOT anorak) jacket, or maybe a trench coat. I am also going to sort out the accessories I have and maybe start wearing some, if not I will clear them out. Any ideas re jacket gratefully received.
  • Hi all

I really want to start this as I have 5 double wardrobes full to bursting, clothes on hangers over the wardrobes, and 2 large chest of drawers with clothes, as well as having about 75 pairs of shoes and about 30 bags

I was just wondering how you start. Do you bring everything out of your wardrobes and attack it that way? or do you do a section of the wardrode? do you try clothes on individually or pair them with other things.

I am really overwhelmed at how much I have got and just want to start to get my life more in order.

I am size 16, apple shape.

Look forward to hearing on how to start this.

    Thanks
  • Love2shpsfor bargains, i would start with one wardrobe at a time, trying everything on, anything that doesn't fit or you don't like get rid of. Do this with each wardrobe untill they are all done. You should be left with clothes that fit NOW, not what you would like to fit into.

After that, start making 'outfits' that would suit the lifestyle you have, then add some accesories. Make a list of any gaps then when the budjet allows aim to fill these gaps, but try and not panick buy, this will only probably result in mistakes.

My specialist subject...............apple shapes!!! Dress what you feel comfortable in and try and adopt any new trends to suit your figure. I have been there (not quiet 5 wardrobe full!!) and it will take time, but keep at it, it will make a difference to how you feel.
