Running in the rain is great isn't it evab? I'm with you on the tidying front - I've got ironing to do; it's a shame I've got a rest day because I know what I'd rather be doing!!

Nice running again krider; where are you racing on Wednesday?

Hmmm, I've been thinking it's about time I got some new shoes. I've done nearly 500 miles in mine and think that I need to buy a new pair soon so that they are broken in before Abingdon. I've seen the same ones as I've got in the Sweatshop sale *soooooo last season daaahling* but my toes have been getting sore on my longer runs and I've got four attractive black toenails so don't know if I ought to have a change.

Is it normal for your toenails to go black when running longer distances or is it a sign that my shoes don't fit properly????

    I'm doing the Thames 10K Simply - http://www.joginthepark.co.uk/

The race pack makes it sound all posh n stuff... Catering will be available for runners and spectators in the race village (their phrase), and all sorts. For just 550 runners  Mind this is the first time this event has been run and I get the impression they are planning on working it up into a bigger event if it all works out.

Forgot to say well done Evab on the hills. Hope the core stuff went OK - I did mine today and the cat tried to sit against me while I was doing situps :rotfl:

It has been known for a long time that people get injured unnecessarily through either doing inappropriate training or 'yo-yo' training.

But, having read a long series of postings on a certain other forum I am not at all surprised that there are so many injuries. It would seem that the following weather types tend to mean that running is just not possible:

    Hot
    Humid
    Wet
    Windy
    Cold
    Slippy
    Leaves On The Ground
    Lightning
    Thunder
    Snow
    Cold Rain

And assunimg the weather hasn't already scuppered a possible run there is still a whole host of other potential show killers:

    Too Early
    Too Late
    Too Dark
    Too Many Dogs
    Too Many Pedestrians
    Too Many Cars
    Too Many Insects
    Too Many Runners()

So by my reckoning that leaves August 22nd at 7pm, which should be just perfect as long as the location is chosen carefully!:p

The body has the same exercise needs regardless of what is going on in the climactic (love that word!!) world so if that list of 'show stoppers' is anything like typical it is all rather counter productive. Running a bit every now and again is very risky even at low pace - tendons and muscles have fully contracted back to their less elastic state between outings and are just perfect for a little snapping and straining.

Yet again it comes back to the word 'consistency', not necessarily doing loads but doing something regularly. This has got to be the easiest way to avoid injury and yet it would seem so difficult to achieve from a lot of the comments that I've been reading.

I'm puzzled why it is so difficult though - most people have breakfast consistently, go to work consistently, go shopping consistently, watch the news consistently and do a whole host of other things consistently - humans like routine. So why do so many people, most who call themselves 'runners', find it so difficult to consistently do something they apparently enjoy?

    Morning!!!

    Loving the new trainers :D:D

    6 x 800m this morning with 1 mile either side warm up/down
    Which went 9:32 warm up mile, 4:17, 4:14, 4:11, 4:17, 4:07, 4:11 and 10:32 warm down

Boy I am stiff but at no point did I feel I was pushing it too hard so thats good - could feel it was going to be a good one when 9:32 was the warm up lap and that was roughly last weeks times...

Anyway am a bit woozy now - off to nap in a corner :p

    Now thats more like it!!!:D:D

A full interval session over the right distances - a new first!;)

You seem to have judged that perfectly looking at the consistency of the times - maybe you will grow to enjoy intervals after all, eh?

I like 800m as you get to rest more often and I seem to have found that Birdcage walk is actually very handy (when you get the distances right :p), but also that I dont need to go crazy on the first one either.

Thanks for the shoe advice UK and Becky - looks like bigger might be better so it's a shopping trip for me next weekend. :T Oh, can I add sore toes to Rich's list - you can't possibly run with those can you? ;)

That was a fantastic rant Rich; I often visit a certain other thread too and amazed at the excuses runners find to put off going out. Part of the fun is juggling everything around to fit the runs in even if it means getting up at 05.00 - it makes the sense of achievement so much greater. :D

Kriders race looks great doesn't it? It's only about an hour from me so I might pencil it in for next year - nothing like looking ahead!!

Well done on the intervals Becky; my speed play was nothing like speedy this morning. My legs were very heavy after Sunday's run and I didn't help matters by tripping over my laptop lead yesterday and tweaking my calf again. :rotfl:

So, it was a nice easy 4 miles just to keep my legs turning over

    4 miles 00:39:15 (09:47/mile)

it took about 3 miles before I felt comfortable and the splits were 10:16, 09:51, 09:44, 09:18.

I'm off to find a race on 22 August at 7.00 pm - I hear the conditions are going to be perfect ...... :rotfl::rotfl:

Becky - Had to look for my receipt email as I could not remember at all the entry cost! :o It was £14 unaffiliated. Not as cheap as you generally like but it worked for me in terms of timing and location.

Simply I meant to say thanks for looking into the cheap goodies - shame they were not that great but you've saved me a trip so much appreciated.

Rich - love that "rant". Where are we all gonna be on the 22nd then :rotfl: :rotfl:
