Well, an interesting run this morning. We set off from our meeting place (about 10 of us) and I was feeling a bit strange. Nothing I could put my finger on, but not right, IYKWIM. Anyway, I called it a day after 3.5 miles. I was light-headed, really hot, although it was a fresh morning and I felt sick. Fortunately I wasn't far from home, so I got back ok. I had a shower and went back to bed.

I don't know what the cause was, I didn't have a hangover or anything, but I wasn't in a fit state to run. I'll see how I feel tomorrow, but even if I run it will only be a short run.

I watched the triathlon on TV. What awesome athletes! Alistair Brownlee seems like a very nice young man, and an amazing 10k time even without the swim and cycle that he had just done. I felt sorry for the two leaders who cycled straight through transition and did another lap. DOH! Also, the guy (forgot his name) who got his foot stuck in the spokes of a bike during transition and broke his foot. Ouch!

  • Oooh, that's not good Chick _pale_ Hope you are feeling better now.

I'm afraid I did laugh a little when I realised the two leaders had gone off on another lap - you don't expect that in a race of that standard do you? I'd forgotten about the chap with the broken foot - ouch!!!

Good viewing wasn't it? Alistair Brownlee made it look soooo easy :D

Thats a shame, Chick......but sounds like its just a virus so should be very short term.

You're right, Alastair is a nice lad but bloody annoying when you see the speed of his warm down laps at the parkruns.:p

It did seem a bit odd with those two cyclists.. doing too few laps would be more understandable, but they would know from their elapsed times that they didnt have another 5K to do. Very odd.

The reason the two Brownlee's got into triathlons is because their uncle was an international triathlete too.

    Oh beer tins!

I went for a 4 mile walk today to get myself started. I know I said I wasn't going to until I'd finished my dissertation, but I thought it might help me focus a bit with my work when I got back.

Anyway, I live approx. 2 miles from a large shopping centre (according to my car spedometre), so I thought I would head in that direction and see how long it took me. First up, though, I had to get some new batteries in my spedometre in order to see exactly where around the shopping centre the 2 mile boundary was, as the other 2 miles would be the way back. In true non-money saving style it turns out that my pedometre simply EATS batteries and needs FOUR of the beasts to function, which saw me fork out £7 to get a man to replace them for me as it was the first time they needed replacing and I didn't know which type to get, and even if I did, it requires a jewler's Phillips head screwdrver which I don't own. (He had originally wanted to charge me £12, so it nearly was even worse). Batteries replaced, I set out...

...I arrived at the shopping centre, only to be told by my pedometre (in KM only as well!), that I was nowhere near the 2 miles/3.25KM I would need to do on the way there to have done your recommended distance on the way back. I carried, on, and ended up nearly as far away again from where I had guessed the two mile mark would be. I was seriously alarmed: I mean, 5KM isn't too near, but the whole point is supposed to be that it isn't that far, is it? It took me ages to walk there, also avoiding all the cars that wanted to eat a piece of my thigh on the way across the side roads. Eventually, I reached the distance and turned back round.

On the way back it started to rain. It wasn't too bad, so I soldiered on, telling myself that I had better get used to it. I started down another long, straight stretch only for a car to honk and pull over. It was my mother, offering a lift to her 'drowned rat of a daughter' (that's a direct quote). I haven't told her of my running plans yet, so I thanked her and carried on home, leaving her to go about her business. I continued, thinking that there would never be a cat in hell's chance that I would ever be able to run a marathon (my eventual aim), if this was 5KM, only to get my joints really well-oiled for free from the bountious man in the sky on the rest of the journey home as the heavens opened in earnest, turning this drowned rat into a beast with which even the rats in the local canal would refuse to associate.

To top it all off, when I got home my pedometre told me that I had only walked 5.40 KM. I didn't expect it to read exactly 6.5 KM, but I didn't expect it to be so far out, given that I had walked the exact same route there and back. I was also suspicious that the route was considertably longer than the 6.5KM I had intended to walk, but I wasn't sure. I've just checked the distance out on a rout planning website and it seems that I had walked/swum a whole 10.92 KM, so my pedometre is evidently severly ill, and I've just spent £7 on it this morning! I thought it was taking a long time: 103 mins to walk all that! Admittedly, there were cars trying to kill me much of the way, a lot of rain and a fairly fierce headwind in places, but that's still pretty slow, isn't it?

Please remind me again: why am I doing this to myself?! ;)

Erm 103 minutes for nearly 11km walking is pretty good, in fact better than pretty good.

I was taking 1:50 - 1:55 to do 10k walks at this time last year so its a good base to start from.:D

Right, confession time!:o I feel dirty and used!:p

That's a really good pace for walking that distance. Sorry your ped wasn't accurate. I have a Fitbug and I must not have calibrated my stride length accurately because it never measures as far as I have really gone.

At least you had a really good walk, lots of fresh air and I'm sure you'll sleep well tonight. ;)

OUCH! Now that is a lot of money for a 10K. Still, you'll probably get a t-shirt.

So, what time are you aiming for at 10k now? If its flat you should be getting sub-39 mins I would have thought.
