Hello everybody - I've just got back (didn't realise it was quite so far) :D

A mixed race report from me - the event was well organised with good marshalling and plenty of drinks stations but it was hot, hot, hot with very little shade. We set out from the town centre and my first mile was a bit fast as it was down hill and I was caught up with the club ruuners.

I soon found myelf at the back of this first group as we set out around the country lanes (we saw sheep, cows and pigs complete with farmyard smells) which was ok but for long periods of time I had a police escort car driving immediately behind me which was a bit off putting.

I tried to keep it controlled for the first 8 miles (between 10:15/10:30 pace) and was glad I did as at mile 8 we hit the hills. I was ok and kept it steady until the last hill at mile 12 and I am very disappointed to report that I had to walk the last part of this hill. :o The organisers had the forethought to put a water/sponge station at the top and after a sponge down and a drink I was fine to carry on running.

So am pleased to have completed the race within my target time (I had decided that I wanted to get under 2:15) but am disappointed that I cannot say I have run a half marathon.

Rich - I saw that you came tantalisingly close to your target time - well done. Becky - I hope you are ok.

Will read back through posts properly after I've had a shower. :D

Edit - forgot to say that's the time from my watch - not the official time as these haven't been posted yet.

    Great effort, Simply.

You've done your first half marathon now and, because of the tiny little walk, you'll be itching to do the next one to prove you've conquered the distance.

Just reflect back on how much you've progressed and you should be delighted with that outcome. Aimed for sub 2:15 and got sub 2:15...nuff said!:D:D

And your WAVA of 55.19% is well up with your other distances, Simply, so that shows the distance work is coming to fruition nicely!:D

  • Thanks evab; I think I just overheated as my legs felt fine and I was ok again after sponging down. We didn't start until 10.30 so I was in the mid-day sun by the time I reached mile 12.

The main lesson I learnt today is to take the sponges on offer and use them - had I done it earlier in the race I probably would have been fine. Still that's what these races are about - gaining experience. :D (still gutted that I walked though)

And ..... the New Forest Half is full so I need to find another race. Any suggestions anyone?????

Thanks Rich; that's cheered me up a bit. A bit down on my 10k WAVA but still not bad. As evab pointed out yesterday at my age I should be glad I can still walk let along run. ;) (only teasing evab)

Rich Becky & Simply...well done on your runs. sorry to hear it didnt work out for Becky.

I have been nursing a monster hangover all day. I dont drink very often and I reckon I havent drunk that much for 10 years!! wasnt really planning to but it was a fun night!

i need to run off all those beer calories now!

Rich, my time was 26.21. finished 105/144

i looked at my garmin and it logged me as running another 250 metres i will have to find a way to calibrate it. i am pleased with my time as i know i can do better so its a good marker!
