Hi there, thanks everyone for your kind words (and dodgy hug - Evab!!) about my job news. I'll be 'keeping my chin up' and carrying on running, because I always find that it sort of puts things into perspective, or at least gives me 'think time' without it feeling like I'm thinking, IYKWIM?

I'm being so lazy today, I'm still in bed! :o The house is quiet and it is such a luxury. Just about to get up though, as I have to pack today for me and DS, which means I have to iron . Oh how I hate ironing!

Well done Rich, Becky & BJSailaway on yesterday's parkrun. Is that a new one? I haven't heard it mentioned before.

KYCU - I fancy giving Heaton Park a go but I'm away next weekend. I'm in Lancashire too, we may not be too far away from each other. I'll pm you.

    Happy long run day!

I'm sat here reading this thread looking for inspiration. I've really tried hard to 'get into running' but I can't seem to get away from the fact that a) I hate it and b) it's really hard! I got a bit lost on Thursday and ran/walked for 6.6 miles which is the furthest I've been so far (bearing in mind the Great North Run is looming) and now I'm sat on the computer, it's raining so the non existant desire to go for a run has now been pushed further back. I know if I don't get myself out I'm going to struggle badly on the GNR. I'm even looking at the ironing mountain and thinking doing that is more preferable!
Will this running thing ever click??? I'm annoyed with myself!

Good effort, UK...you're making 20 miles seem almost routine now!:D

So are you going do do any races prior to the Bristol Half to consolidate some of this training? I thnk it would be a good idea to get a 10K or 10mile , or both, done in the near future to see where you're at!

Hiya K, I had a love/hate relationship with running for years - I enjoyed the quick results of fitness and toning up but faced with the choice of going out and getting started or laying on the sofa then the sofa won 99% of the time.

I joined a running club when I lived in Bedford and really enjoyed it and benefited from the range of groups available, you were never left out and felt comfortable running with other people who you soon make friends with.

There's no getting away from it running or any form of exercise is hard, and often the hardest bit is getting started. And it carries on being hard, as you progress you'll have some good days but you'll still have some hard days too.

Try and prepare yourself for your next run by getting your kit ready to go, have a nice route plan, not sure what others think but I would reduce the mileage to complete a steady run with no walking e.g. 3 miles?

Is there anyone you can run with, or is there a running club near you?

I've found that since having my second baby my motivation and drive is huge and my goal is something that I wouldn't have thought was achievable a few years ago! (Goal to be announced on Saturday ;-)

You have done really well, maybe just take a day off and refocus for tomorrow, and get your kit ready! Ev x

Thats an interesting post, K_bagpuss, as it is intriguing why anyone would try to 'get into' something that they hated so much.

As for being hard, it does indeed take a lot of effort, over a long period of time, to establish long term fitness and health benefits, but its an investment of effort that large numbers of people find highly enjoyable and rewarding.

To keep at something as part of an ongoing healthy lifestyle it is essential to enjoy the 'process' not to see it as some great arduous grind to reach an ultimate goal somewhere in the distant future.
