Hi guys
Was wondering if I could join you on this thread.
Ive just in my wise wisdom signed up for the Dublin 10k next April - having not run since school.
My brother and other relations are doing it, and I would be there anyway so thought why not
Now the problem is i am very unfit and actually dreading it so I am going to read through the thread and hopefully you can throw some tips at me. I know ive got to start slow and do have quite a while to train. The training will start in earnest next week when my baby sitter is back off holiday - see excuses already!:rotfl:
now im going to read page 1
Bekki
Right I've had some coffee now
If you are already walking a couple of miles a day then thats great (see my siggie), what I would do is plan out how many weeks between now and race day and break that down into three chunks roughly:
now till end of October
November to Jan
Feb to April
Use the first chunk to get your fitness up by speeding up the walking and trying out some running - you need to get to a point by October where you can walk 6 miles easily and run maybe 2-3 miles. I'll dig out the instructions on how you do this later...
The second chunk you need to get up to running 6 miles - as slowly as you like to start with but by the end of Jan you should be getting there.
The third chunk is about adding some speed play in the form of fartlek, adding some longer runs to give you the confidence to really 'run' the 10k and reducing the expected time
You can do a lot more than get round by April if you train consistently - so you'll need to see how many days a week you can run on to start with (three or four is good) and that'll give you good guidance on what you'll be doing each session
I went from zero fitness to a 10 mile race in 5 months so its totally possible:D

Great stuff, bj-sailaway, you seem to be making great progress. Once you're up to running 4 miles (or your 3.6 mile circuit will do!) continually we'll work on a training plan for you if you want and depending on what your goals are. Don't compare your pace to anyone else's at the moment, we all started out where you are now.
bekkki1, welcome! You've got loads of time to get ready for a 10k. I'm sure we can knock up a training plan for you so that it will be a pleasurable - rather than painful - experience! For now, get to walking about 4 miles regularly. You should be walking briskly, with fairly heavy breathing. Or if pushing a pram, it doesn't need to be as quick, as long as the effort level is the same. This is all about getting your body strengthened up and ready to start running. We tend to promote a slow build up, aiming to avoid injury. Once you have been doing these walks for a while, you can start running very very slowly and as far as you can, like bj-sailaway is at the moment. Then, walk the rest of the circuit at a brisk pace. Avoid run-walk-run-walk, as this method tends to cause a lot of injuries, especially amongst new runners who's joints and muscles aren't used to the strain. Give your body the time it needs to adapt.
kmstuart, you scare me with your running exploits, well done!
Nothing much to report from me. 8K run this morning, roughly 38-39 mins according to my rubbish watch. Just nice to get out on mornings like this, warm but not as hot as it was a few weeks ago.

becky's training plans are more concise than mine, it's worth listening to her! Let us know what your aims are for the 10K and how much time you have to train i.e. how many days, and how many hours on those days.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0

Beer tins your plans are perfectly sensible - you just need to follow them
Well done on the 8k!
We are most likely doing wimbledon on 22nd August if you are free (we are doing it before then but I know you are away and then dentist bound)

Erm i may or may not got for a wee run a it later on after i have been shopping
Not sure on proper training resuming yet but thats more cos i havn't filled in my plans yet. Was a tad tired/lazy sunday when i was gonna do it. I do have a race next wednesday so i'll need to see what hurts. Currently its only my calf still.
Some one on RW asked me if i was gonna do another, the answer was off course being my 12 hour distance is further than my 24 hour one despite running an extra 3 hours at the 24 hour one.
Rich my Devon 100 entry is confirmed so best remove me from VLM 2010 as if i get in it'll be deferred. Also i did the Heaton parkrun week after you in 24:29.Debt free Nerd number 1122 LBM Jan 2009 Debt @ LBM £40,086.88 (14/01/09)

Thanks. 8k is pretty much my "default" run at the moment, though! I'll come to the parkrun if I'm around, though I might be going to the US for 2 weeks at some stage in August for work training.Running Club targets 20105KM - 21:00 21:55 (59.19%)10KM - 44:00 --:-- (0%)Half-Marathon - 1:45:00 HIT! 1:43:08 (57.84%)Marathon - 3:45:00 --:-- (0%)0 -
Well we've planned the next 10 weeks and 5 of those are in London so we'll be around some of August/September anyway...got my American friends around that weekend and possibly the one after too so that'll be cool
Dont worry about the distances at the moment - it'll get settled once you're into the new job0 -

Your doing the right thing by starting slow, walking will be what the better runners on here will recommend first, but they will be along soon to offer more advice.
Do you have any goals in mind or just want to get round?
Just found my pic from the end of the mansfield half.Im surprised at how clam i look because by they end of it i was shattered and completly out of energy
