Neighbour thinks I bumped his car
Options
Hi all,
After a bit of advice...
A couple of weeks ago a neighbour left a note on my windscreen saying he saw me reverse into his car in the morning as I left for work. He says the alarm was set off which prompted him to look out of the window where he saw me drive away. I live in tenement flats so it's just on street parking, no way to know which car is his and I've never met him. Assuming that his car is the one that was parked behind me; it didn't occur to me that i'd hit it and I certainly didn't hear an alarm going off. Otherwise I would have got out of the car and looked.
He offered to sort out the damage outside of the insurance if i'd prefer to save my NCB. I've been very careful to avoid admitting liability but asked to see the damage to his car. Unfortunately we were both away on holiday for a couple of weeks so I didn't get to see the car then decided it would be easier just to pass it over to the insurance to sort out.
I've reported the incident to my insurers and told them that i wasn't aware at the time that i'd hit him. They said that if his claim was successful I wouldn't have to pay an excess but I'd lose 2 years NCB. I've passed my insurance details onto the neighbour.
The other guy has been quite aggressive and has threatened to inform the police previously because due to my holiday i didn't reply to one of his messages for 2 days (presumably this would be a 'hit & run' charge?)
My concern is that, if my insurers dispute his claim he'll get the police involved or take this to court. Is it worth me accepting liability and some NCB for something I didn't think at the time I'd done for the sake of an easy life?
What would you do?

His alarm went off. He looked out of the window and saw you driving off to work.
He didn't see you hit his car, he hasn't any witnesses that saw you hit his car. Let him take you to court. What is his case?: "I think this person hit my car but they deny it and I haven't got any evidence or witnesses to say they did"? He'll get laughed out of court! He offered to sort out the damage outside of the insurance if i'd prefer to save my NCB.
How nice of him to offer to preserve your NCB!
Clearly this guy hasn't a leg to stand on and is trying it on. If he continues to act aggressively, inform the police.
I think you'll have to stick to your guns with the insurance. If you truely didn't hit his car, then make sure you say this on your form.Is it worth me accepting liability and some NCB for something I didn't think at the time I'd done for the sake of an easy life?
Hell no! That's just caving in to being bullied.0 -
Surely you would know if you hit a car? If not, then do you think you're safe enough to be on the roads?"I can hear you whisperin', children, so I know you're down there. I can feel myself gettin' awful mad. I'm out of patience, children. I'm coming to find you now." - Harry Powell, Night of the Hunter, 1955.0

some sensetive alarms can be set off by another cars exhaust note or doors slamming
surley you know if you hit it or not...has your car got a mark that matches where he claims it was hit?0 -
Tell him to sling his hook, this bloke is trying it on with youThe World come on.....0

I would have thought you would have known if you had it something. How much damage is there? Did you get to see the damage? Wasn't sure from your post, sounded like you didn't. Also you say that your neighbour said the alarm went off and you didn't hear it? Ummm something doesn't sound right about this. Any damage to your car?0

I don't think the police will be bothered, he has your details which is all you have to give him.0 -
id tell him to get knotted tbh0

Can you see a dent on your car?0

You either hit it or you didn't? Talking to him to see the damage makes you look guilty.
Should have told him in no uncertain terms that you never hit it(if that is true).0 -
