This doesnt make sense. There is NO WAY your neigbour would have heard an alarm and you didnt. There would also be similar damage in the area your car supposedly hit the other car, that is unless you drive a tractor. Either you are lying or he is. I'm inclined to say you are to be honest because if I( or probably anyone else) would know if they hit a car, and they would not be as unsure as you about what to do. The only reason i would cave into this mans demands if i felt guility.

Car alarms are strange things. They can be set off by a change in the temperature but I'm pretty sure you would have to have hit your neighbours car quite hard enough for you to have felt it in order to set it off, and if so, there would be at least a scuff on each bumper (take a tape measure to see if there is a rough match) to show for it. I wouldn't worry about the police - they certainly won't be interested. If he can't show you the damage then it either never existed or he has been stupid enough to wash away the "evidence".

Why oh why is this forum so pathetically suspicious and judgemental.

The OP made a statement of events as he recalled. If you can't take that at face value and show the respect that all posters deserve then **** off.

Accusing people of posting for dubious reasons is just nasty and only reflects on your own standards.

If he or she is telling a porky then they will get their come-uppance later in the process. It doesn't need a bunch of piuos numpties to judge ahead of the facts.

Given that insurance scams and cons of various kinds are prevalent - both were the first thing that sprang to my mind. No alarm heard? Nothing happened then!
I once had a car deliberately drive into the side of me and wanted to exchange details or he would call the police. When he said - ''come on mate I've already got a load of damage on that side I've got to pay for'' I just laughed and sent him on his way!

    - and how is this con-merchant going to explain to the police that he didn't report the matter of a drive-off at the time?

Surely you would know if you hit a car? If not, then do you think you're safe enough to be on the roads?

he stated he was not aware of anything and would have reacted appropriately if he had been.

There's no way I could imagine touching a car (let alone causing any damage) without being aware that I had done so! I agree with the above posts - let him call the police or take you to court... just keep an eye out for mysterious scratches suddenly appearing on your car...

lol! Or park behind him and say he hit your car and you alarm went off! Make sure he's not there though!! joking!

Ask to see the damage and get a phot on phone or whatever so you can see what te damage is or he can say anything and show rhe insurers any damage how bad is the damage anyway?

This is a tricky one as a I know from experience. a neighbour swerved across the road and hit my mates car and we saw him do it as we were in te garden and he still denied it despite my mate having a whitness. He refused his nsurance details and wet sraigh to have is car fixed it was fine that evening and he said what damage my car is fine.

When we involved police as on highway (was yours in the car park as private ground anyway or does it count as a public highway?) they wre reluctant to do anything and eventually talked to him. He grudgingly offered to have the wokr done at his mate's garage!!

So don't thonk he has much chance of getting you to pay but he may turn nasty, as this bloke in our case rang the police to say my mate had been drinking and came to mine, he got stoped by police on way home lucklily he doesn'r drink and drive! Also when my tax lapsed as away for a few months he contacted police aetc etc Suffice to say he may he nasty.

Realy depends how much the damae wil cost to fix i suppose!

I'm sorry but I find it difficult to believe that he allegedly hit the car with the force to cause damage severe enough to warrant an insurance claim yet didn't know about it. If he is that unaware while driving then perhaps he needs to seriously consider some refresher driving lessons. What if it had been a child playing behind his car when he reversed?

Because a good proportion of posts on here are from folks that have lets say made "an error of judgement", and are looking for a way to "save paying the price"

An open mind has to be kept:confused:What would you have said if the other bloke had posted his version?

ie Something on the lines of; "Looked out of my window after my car alarm sounded, saw vehicle hurridly making off and found damage to my car, what should I do??"

The replies would have been very much different, allways 2 sides to a conflict :confused:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
