I'm on a day of today, and I have noticed one thing, the amount of women around here who stay at home to look after the children while there partners work.

I live in a working class area, people around here are not doctors/lawyers etc, they are builders/factory workers and the likes.

Yet they all seem to go away reguarly on little breaks, have nice cars, the best clothes, have nights out, some don't even work and go on holidays and have the best of everything. I watched people across the street move in about a month ago, a mother, daughter and grand daughter, none seem to work, yet in the space of a month we have seen new sofa's, house painted, electronic deliveries, not bad for people that don't work.

My OH works, I work yet we can't afford a night in a B&B, and its all well and good saying "Aw they are in debt to the eyes" is the entire street in debt to the eyes? I doubt it, and besides the unemployed can't get credit.

I was just wondering what the secret was, do you know? Someone obviously forgot to tell us as we both work, probably the only couple in the street that do yet we are the worst off and going no where fast.

I can't even say they are pretending to live by themselves and claim benefits for single parents or whatever as we are the only ones who rent, the rest all own, the mind boggles.

I could extend this to work and my own family and they are all not in debt and not really any better of than us salary wise but yet money is no object.

SO WHATS THE SECRET??? GO ON YOU CAN TELL ME;)

Sloppy thinking I'm afraid. You take a snapshot view of your surroundings, make alot of assumptions, and probably only see the things you want to see, because you want those things yourself, and make it into some 'secret'.

One family have nice cars, another go on holiday, others have stay at home mums - this does not mean everyone can have all those things and more.

You see a family move in and buy lots of new trinkets - are you also there to see a debt collector knock on their door? Or that the only breadwinner is working in a foreign hellhole of a country at risk of kidnap or worse?

Did you notice perhaps that those people who go on holidays haven't had a holiday for the last 10 years?

What would we see looking at your life? You and your wife both have jobs. Yes you might hate your jobs, but to some people you are the lucky ones.

There is unfairness and inequality everywhere. All you can do is concentrate on you and your family.

If we told you it wouldn't be a secret now would it? :D
  • Everybody has different values I guess!

The OH and I would much rather scrimp and save and buy something second hand that does us fine than owe somebody money for something fancy. Recently we were thinking of scrapping our '96 clio with its many problems under the government scrappage scheme for a new car, but it would have meant taking a car loan; we decided we just couldn't justify the debt when we could save up whilst the clio was still running and buy another (younger, reliable) second hand car outright. We would love to buy new stuff, but frankly, we know better than to kid ourselves that that's a lifestyle we can afford!

You will find that the mums who stay at home have either no qualifications and just do menial jobs on minimum wage. This government makes it that way, you can be qualified, have a degree and the other types just breed kids and get tax credits, right name for that is social security money because it sounds better the government called it tax credits it makes everybody who claims it feel better.

Did you know you could study and get a career but another can have kid after kid and with no qualifications get more take home pay than you, the system is not right.

Not true. I may well become a stay at home parent when I have children, and I have 4 degrees.
  • can i ask what is wrong with council houses, i'm a single parent and live in a council house, i have spent the last 5 yrs at college and university studying to be a staff nurse, now i'm working as a staff nurse i pick and choose my hours to work, i'm also on tax credits, i have all the mod cons PC, laptop, Wii, psp, DS, i dont see what the problem is, people have the right to spend there money on what they want i say.
